Yes Sian! Throw that Screenplay Oscar to them
At least a deserving one will be winning this time.
ReplyMay 3, 2022 at 6:33 am #1204940620Moonlight won I don’t think it is because of homophobia
And a black gay movie at that. It doesn’t matter that it’s the only LGBTQ movie to win BP in almost a century. You must be right…there’s no sexism, racism or homophobia inside the Academy.
ReplyMay 3, 2022 at 5:33 am #1204940580The Lead characters of those movies weren’t gay. TPOFD’s lead character was gay
Yeah, I have no doubt some people just didn’t like it because of its pace or dark vibe but to act as if the homoerotic undertones or the commentary on toxic masculinity had nothing to do with certain persons hating it… many sam elliots out there loathing how Campion transformed a traditionally masculine genre into a complex exploration of identity and toxicity. We like to think the Academy has evolved but I’m pretty sure Brokeback Mountain would have lost too. We overestimated just how progressive and diverse they really are.
ReplyApril 11, 2022 at 2:43 pm #1204913116As a queer creative I so so disagree with this. And especially for Killing Eve. So many fans for years have overdone the show’s queer narrative far more than it ever actually existed. This is understandable given how much we are starved of stories about queer women so ascribing them to anything and everything possible makes sense. Killing Eve was a story of mutual obsession. To have made it about queer love in my view would have been incredibly dangerous and very very toxic as all the horrific things that both of them do would be inevitably tied to queerness. I’m not a fan of the ending either. But that’s nothing to do with it not being written by a queer person given that I find it regressive to suggest that queerness is what the show is overly about.
I think almost always killing your gay characters is even more dangerous for queer kids because they might grow up scared of being happy and believing they don’t deserve it. As for Eve and Villanelle, I feel like you’re reducing their complicated and dark relationship to just obsession. They understand and complete each other. They can’t function without each other. The show has always been about them reveling into their messy and weird relationship. Not everything has to be black and white and follow the moral path.
April 11, 2022 at 1:46 pm #1204913028The score next week:
Good. Tired of seeing most queer characters getting killed when they are within touching distance of happiness.
April 11, 2022 at 1:22 pm #1204912980think movies like Unforgiven, The English Patient and No Country for Old Men are gorgeous-looking flicks that are really boring.
I agree about The English Patient but I found No Country to be so tense and gripping. Really surprised some people find it as boring as the English Patient. They couldn’t be more different imo.
ReplyApril 6, 2022 at 3:58 am #1204906004Will Smith will be fine. At the end of the day it’s just an adult man slapping another adult man, far from being an actual “assault”.
This was definitely assault. The way some people here are trying to minimize physical violence just because Smith didn’t cover Rock in blood… disgusting.
I’ve seen so many bad takes but saying that this is how black people relate to each other (that woman Tiffany Cross) or that this is not assault made me gag.
ReplyApril 1, 2022 at 2:23 am #1204892387To be fair, I I’d seen somebody slapped pretty hard right in front of me, I’d definitely be a bit shaken. I think that’s a very normal response.
Yes, followed by him screaming twice ‘keep my wife’s name out of your fucking mouth’. It’s when it got really quiet in the theatre. It can be very triggering for victims of domestic abuse and bullying.
At first, I said no way they are taking his Oscar but seeing the Academy’s response not so sure anymore. I think rescinding will also be on the table when the board meets on April 18.
ReplyMarch 31, 2022 at 4:49 pm #1204892013Did Chris Rock apologize to Jada yet or he gets away with making fun of her alopecia in front of an international audience just because he’s a “comedian”? He already showed his racist self with those anti-Asian jokes in 2016 and again this year when announcing the winner. He said Ahmir Thompson (Questlove) and “4 white guys”. Never mind the fact that one of those men was South Asian, aren’t you supposed to read out the winners names? He’s not only racially insensitive but a jerk as well but that behavior is always approved by the Academy. This is why I hate what Will did even more…before this, he was a class act for 30 years and even on his worst day, he was a better man than Chris Rock but now the latter will be seen as the victim.
I truly doubt Chris Rock even knew Jada has alopecia and Smith laughed at the joke at first. He compared her to Demi Moore who was insanely hot in G.I. Jane. Gee, what an insult. It was exceedingly dumb to hit someone over this, come on. Stop looking for excuses to his behavior.
March 31, 2022 at 1:06 pm #1204891756It’s not necessarily the repressed gay angle, hun. Some of you totally missed the metatextual element of having British Benedict Cumberbatch play the archetypal cowboy. Phil is basically a nerd who graduated summa cum laude from Yale with a degree in classics. His entire macho/rugged persona is performative. That’s why it works brilliantly.
The fact that some people think everything revolves around him being gay or sex…💀 Way to miss the fact that he’s a highly educated and intelligent man that feels unfulfilled professionally. He’s stuck at this ranch playing a role and wasting his life.
ReplyMarch 28, 2022 at 8:42 am #1204885700Yep. If they made fun of a health condition Kirsten had, and Plemons did the same thing Will did the reaction would be…a bit different.
Imagine if Plemons, a white guy, had gone on that stage and actually punched a black man…pls he would get destroyed.
ReplyMarch 27, 2022 at 9:45 pm #1204884305The way some of you are trying to justify violence here. I don’t care if he’s your idol or whatever. He was wrong and you shouldn’t be defending him here.
ReplyMarch 27, 2022 at 9:27 pm #1204884172I find it offensive how the rest of the night went to soften the blow on Will’ reputation and no one gave a shit or acknowledge Chris.
This. I hope he’s all right and that he will press charges.
ReplyMarch 27, 2022 at 9:17 pm #1204884111CODA is gonna be forgotten even faster than Green Book was since Will Smith just gave the biggest Oscar moment since Moonlight/La La Land mixup💀
Did people even notice CODA won? Everyone on Twitter is talking about Smith getting violent.
