Wait, Kevin O’Connell did sound for Spider-Man: No Way Home?!?
Yeah, that’s partly why I’ve got Spider-Man getting a nom.

ReplyJanuary 3, 2022 at 5:45 am #1204693924Oh dear. Spider-Man popping up. It’s getting PGA isn’t it? Watch it knock something more deserving like TLD out of the BP line up.
It likely hits PGA. Still probably won’t get in Picture. Won’t lie, I would honestly rather see it in over Don’t Look Up.
January 3, 2022 at 5:36 am #1204693916Encanto is in my top ten films of the year and I would LOVE it if it were to make it in to the BP lineup! (I am not a huge animated film fan so when I really love an animated film it’s a big surprise for me). It is unfortunately very unlikely though. I think it will get three Oscar nominations: Animated Film, Original Score, and Original Song.
Would so love to see Encanto get lots of love on nominations day. We’ll likely just have to settle for those three. Won’t lie tho, wish they had submitted “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” for Song lol.

ReplyDecember 24, 2021 at 3:32 pm #1204677692Honestly if Spider-Man gets a Picture nom I am staying the fuck off social media lol. The discourse would be more toxic and intense than all the conversations about MCU and cinema that came before. Film Twitter would absolutely collapse.

ReplyNovember 15, 2021 at 6:27 pm #1204581017For anyone who knows, is this film a VFX player or not lol?
November 13, 2021 at 4:37 pm #12045765294. Please please please please at least one nomination somewhere for The Green Knight. Beautiful film.
I would think that Green Knight’s best chance for recognition could be Makeup. I’d love for it to get a ton of nods but that seems it’s most realistic bet. I think Costume and VFX are more outside shots tho.
ReplyNovember 5, 2021 at 3:28 pm #1204559992I don’t disagree about Black Panther, I knew that, but still, it was assumed to be getting nominated. And as I said, the “major” MCU movies are what are important. Almost all Marvel movies to be nominated were Iron Mans, Avengers, and GotGs. The first is what kickstarted the entire universe, the second combines the entire universe, and the third is basically “Star Wars” Marvel. The only other two to get in were Doctor Strange (undeniably more visually stunning than other standalones) and CA: TWS. The latter I think is just an exception. It was a pretty weak year, and it had good effects, so it was nominated. But every single other one was “major”. So Eternals being an epic is in. But Shang-Chi and Spider-Man are “basic” Marvel so they won’t. That’s my rationale.
Yeah, I get that point lol.
So in line with that rationale, Spider-Man seems like a “major” one as well to me, what with the reuniting of old Spider-Man characters, the inclusion of Dr Strange (and thus probably a LOT of effects, particularly those trippy visuals associated with the character), so it probably has showier effects than the last two Spider-Man movies, so that’s why I think it’s a stronger contender lol, it’s all about what impresses at the bake-off.
ReplyNovember 5, 2021 at 2:57 pm #1204559914Lol this is basically exactly what I said:
“Well… imma let ya know a little secret. They HATE marvel lol. It WILL NOT get three movies in VFX mark my words. Even two is too much. Black Panther couldnt even get in and it was a frontrunner and a BP nominee. Dune is safe safe safe locked locked locked. Matrix Resurrections seems pretty safe as well. Eternals I think is in because it’s a “major” MCU movie (like avengers). Godzilla vs. Kong also seems in given Kong: Skull Island made it. Last slot I’m giving to Free Guy. I’ve seen it, and its vfx are great. Reminiscent of Ready Player One (yes, not as good, but still good).”
Eh well, assuming Spider-Man won’t get nominated simply because it’s Marvel isn’t rlly true lmao. The Academy at large is normally pretty averse to Marvel yeah. The VFX branch itself, tho, hasn’t necessarily demonstrated that it hates Marvel. Since 2012’s The Avengers, every year has seen at least one MCU entry get nominated, except for last year (no release) or 2015 when there were a slew of prestige players (also, Star Wars lmao). Even so, 2017 at least demonstrated that it’s possible for Marvel to beat two prestige films when Guardians of the Galaxy 2 beat Dunkirk and Shape of Water.
Basically I’m saying that it comes down to the bake-off and what leaves the best impression on voters. Three Marvel nominations is unlikely this year, I agree, but I mean, there’s been two in one year before (2014) so it’s possible both Spider-Man and Eternals will be nominated.
Also, Black Panther didn’t get nominated because there were criticisms about the CGI lol. Had the effects been actually good I’m very sure it would have been nominated alongside Infinity War. Black Panther had a lot of good will that year so it probably would have won lmfao.
