That London Films Critics win for Blanchett quieted a lot of the Yeoh chatter. It will rise again once Yeoh potentially takes SAG, but it will likely be short-lived since Cate is sweeping after SAG.
Well, there is nothing after SAG, except Spirit Awards. BAFTA and AACTA are happening before SAG. If Blanchett wins BAFTA and AACTA, Yeoh really needs to win SAG. Ideally for her, she also wins Spirit Awards which happens right in the middle of voting for Oscars.

Is her playing to cosplayers the ultimate fall, something she will never recover from – becoming thing she hated the most? Or is she getting a second chance in reinventing herself and probably just the first chapter of her return to the top.
Just as we can imagine TAR 2 being about Lydia in Philippines/Taiwan/Thailand just doing what she hated the most, so it can be like reinventing herself and returning to the top. This is interesting about the movie – it does not give us definite conclusions of how our cancel culture works, it just asks the questions and we need to figure them out. Do we believe in complete ostracization of “cancelled” celebrities, or do we believe in second chances? And then we can ask ourselves – if all those celebrities were salivating over Brad Pitt at the Globes, and many supported Depp, how definite the entire cancel culture is?

Best Supporting Actress: Angela BassettFebruary 7, 2023 at 7:46 am #1205295608This was what many were predicting in 2015
- Picture: Boyhood
- Director: Birdman
- Screenplay: The Grand Budapest Hotel
however, sometimes the Academy doesn’t care about that. (Birdman won all 3). It’s possible but I’m pretty sure EEAAO will win one of Director or Screenplay with Picture/Supporting Actor. If EEAAO loses Director, then it will most likely win screenplay, and vice versa.
Yeah, I am more inclined to believe in that – either EEAAO sweeps all three, or McDonagh wins Screenplay with Daniels win Picture + Director, or Spielberg wins Director, and EEAAO takes Picture + Screenplay.

Best Supporting Actress: Angela BassettFebruary 6, 2023 at 7:44 pm #1205295117Given our five directors are also nominated for both Picture and Original Screenplay, I wonder if we would get a total spread of the wealth
EEAAO gets Picture
Spielberg gets Director
McDonagh gets ScreenplayAnd in that case, I suppose the win for TAR would be Blanchett. I am not over the moon about Spielberg winning Director, but I can see it happening.

I just think if people want Deadwyler to win the SAG, they shouldn’t be advised against it, simply, because according to some, Yeoh may need it for the Oscar. If Deadwyler takes it home, it will be beyond deserved, especially with that Oscar nomination snub.
And as we have both mentioned, Yeoh can still win SAG and lose the Oscar. It has happened multiple times before to other actors, so in the grand scheme of things, does it truly matter whether she takes it the SAG or not? Oscar’s Best Actress still remains a Yeoh vs. Blanchett race.
The emphasis on Yeoh winning SAG is because it is expected for Blanchett to take AACTA and BAFTA. Yeoh missing on SAG means that she goes on Oscar night without any industry award, solely with Golden Globe – Musical or Comedy. And so far I don’t think anyone has won an Oscar only with that. So, if Blanchett takes AACTA and BAFTA, Yeoh really needs to take SAG to “stay in the game”. Naturally, the worst for her would be to lose from Blanchett at SAG. At that point, I would assume it is “game over”. Of course, all of this becomes moot point if Yeoh wins BAFTA and/or AACTA. So, she does need SAG. She may not win an Oscar if she wins SAG, but she is 99,9% losing if she loses SAG.

I see that my positioning has stirred some controversy, but I stand firm. I could think of no greater nightmare than standing at the podium, headset over my ear, conducting in front of the eyes of God and a sea of "cosplayers." https://t.co/JKut0vhRK0

Best Supporting Actress: Angela BassettFebruary 5, 2023 at 7:47 pm #1205291520My concern is if Todd Field splits votes between screenplay and director. Some might think they’re rewarding him in director and some in screenplay.
But that is the issue with everyone. All 5 nominated directors are also nominated in Original Screenplay, so I suppose all will be splitting votes.

Best Supporting Actress: Angela BassettFebruary 5, 2023 at 5:51 pm #1205290361I am failing to see the logic. Even if Yeoh wins the SAG, it does not signify that she will win the Oscar, nor does her losing the SAG prevent her from winning the Oscar.
I am rooting for Yeoh to win the Oscar, but Deadwyler should bring the SAG Award for Best Actress home.
When was the last time Globe – Musical/Comedy winner won solely with that? She needs at least one industry win. And if Cate wins AACTA and BAFTA, I honestly can’t see how Michelle is going to win solely with Globe, without at least SAG.

I understand this sentiment and I would have loved to see Danielle getting some award hardware this season. However, at this point, Yeoh needs SAG. If Blanchett is to take BAFTA as we all predict/suspect, the only path towards Oscar for Yeoh is to take SAG.

That is not fair. There were many of us who understood how TAR can be perceived as too highbrow for industry. Blanchett was always a different case, but it should be noted that TAR is doing better than we initially thought it would. Overall, I think most people understood how it could be Blanchett vehicle as she won Volpi Cup in Venice, but with 6 Academy Award nominations (and those 6 are the important ones), it speaks how much the movie is appreciated.

Best Supporting Actress: Angela BassettFebruary 5, 2023 at 11:25 am #1205285564I honestly don’t understand why some people are rattled by this. This was fairly predictable. This race is still about who wins SAG and BAFTA, or whether they go different ways. If either of two women wins both, that’s that – game over. If, as we expect, Blanchett wins BAFTA and Yeoh SAG, we will have no definite answer until the envelope is opened. Or Streep comes out and proclaim the winner without reading it.

Best Supporting Actress: Angela BassettFebruary 5, 2023 at 10:50 am #1205285426I was not exactly surprised by this. People forget that while EEAAO did great in US, in UK it didn’t go as well. Comparatively:
1. EEAAO: US box office: $72M, UK box office: $6,2M
2. Banshees: US box office: $10M, UK box office: $11M
3. TAR: US box office: $6M, UK box office: $1,8MThe numbers suggest TAR and Banshees are doing better with British audience than American one. Plus, we can’t forget that this is home-terf for Banchees’ crew. And that there is such thing as recency bias as Banshees and TAR are currently in UK cinemas.

BTW, Michelle Yeoh’s speech – a thing of beauty!
