This board goes through phases of hating on specific pundits. Right now it is Clayton Davis. Months ago it was Zoe Bryant. Sometimes it is Matt Neglia. When someone turns out to be wrong about anything (which happens to everyone because no one is 100% right about anything) it is time to mock mock mock. 😛
I was so pissed off a month ago because almost everyone was acting like Babylon was still in the running for Best Picture and The Woman King had no chance to get in but turns out I was right and also wrong AF. Babylon was not in the running. But The Woman King didn’t make the cut either.

He didn’t get enough votes to make the shortlist but he clearly did get some votes from some voters. The BAFTA and SAG snubs may have even mobilized people to put him #1 on their Oscars ballot because they wanted to ensure he got in this time. You never really know.
ReplyFebruary 1, 2023 at 7:03 am #1205279265There were several women that didn’t get in and any one of them could have been sixth. I don’t understand why people are arguing about something we can never truly know with such confidence. It literally doesn’t matter who was sixth. It has never mattered who was sixth. There is no way of knowing. We will likely never know.
Save your energy. 🤣
ReplyFebruary 1, 2023 at 6:13 am #1205279223Film criticism has become so political. The critics have their own agenda, they decide which actor/actress and movie to push in the awards race whether they deserve it or not.
It’s literally always been political. Because of social media and the fact that it is easier to obtain insider gossip, more of the general public is aware of it now.
ReplyJanuary 27, 2023 at 1:52 pm #1205270969Here is the main thing: after #OscarsSoWhite in 2015, the Academy did damage control for the next 7 years by adding nearly 800 new members every single year just to show the world that they weren’t racist and were trying to be inclusive. And now they have to deal with more backlash because of one thirsty White actress getting in out of nowhere when two Black actresses seemed to be locked.
The Academy as a whole does not give a fuck about Danielle Deadwyler being nominated. But what they DO care about is being made to look bad when the governing board was forced to make sweeping changes and spent SEVEN years trying to diversify their membership. The entire point of that was to impact the diversity of the nominees. It makes sense people are pissed off behind the scenes.
Like I said, Andrea should enjoy this while she can because I don’t see her getting nominated again.
January 27, 2023 at 12:50 pm #1205270890Anyone who gets the “replacement” nomination would have to deal with an asterisk by their name and that’s embarrassing for them and unfair. I honestly think that any actor would prefer to leave it at four than to get the “we fucked up so here: you were SIXTH in-line” make-up nomination.
Deadwyler winning the SAG would be preferable. Just like when Emily Blunt got snubbed for both Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress that one year and so the actor’s guild awarded her with SAG Best Actress.
January 27, 2023 at 12:33 pm #1205270865I think she’s in a lose-lose situation no matter what the Academy does regarding the investigation. This marks a bad precedent for her.
Well, yeah. The fact that her nomination is the only one ~under question~ is embarrassing.
Again, it is what it is. She got the nomination. The least she can do is deal with the backlash. 😛 But I think rescinding it entirely is a step too far.
I think her punishment will likely be that no one will rally for her to get nominated in the future. So, she should enjoy this one. 😌
January 27, 2023 at 10:48 am #1205270702They will do something behind the scenes to ensure it doesn’t happen again but I think rescinding the nomination would be…really mean. Andrea has never been nominated before and rescinding this nomination would ensure she would be viewed as a controversial enough figure to never get another one because of bad history.
It is what it is.
January 27, 2023 at 10:42 am #1205270687I really think everyone and their dog knows that Jennifer Lawrence will one day win another Oscar. It’s really not a matter of “if” it is a matter of “when”. Acting vets like DiCaprio, Streep, De Niro, and Viola Davis talk about her with a level of respect that is singular imo. Even people that don’t like her would be delusional to deny that her fellow actors view her as this golden child prodigy.
There is no way she doesn’t get future chances. So, her not being nominated for this movie doesn’t really matter.
But Brian’s nomination? It changes the game for him. He will get acting opportunities now that he would not have had access to before. That is exciting AF.
ReplyJanuary 27, 2023 at 10:19 am #1205270655What I find especially funny out of this is that for all of their years and years of success and networking that clearly Jennifer Aniston and Jennifer Lopez just do not have 219 industry friends that like them enough. 💀
January 27, 2023 at 10:15 am #1205270641People are also asking for the Academy to investigate Bryan Tyree Henry’s campaign …
Leonardo DiCaprio and Eddie Redmayne desperately hobnobbed for months and get Oscar WINS out of it (didn’t Redmayne go as far as to get married like wtf) but one Black actor gets his first nomination and all of a sudden y’all want to conduct internal investigations.
There is nothing Brian did that was against the rules. If it was against the rules, why weren’t Leo and Eddie scrutinized?
Yeah, okay.

This doesn’t affect the Oscars. This affects the Razzies. ❤️
January 24, 2023 at 1:53 pm #1205264615The thing that I can’t explain is why did this strategy work for Andrea Riseborough but not for actors like Adam Sandler for Uncut Gems or Jennifer Aniston for Cake? They both seem very well connected to other A lists. Maybe Andrea is much more respected than them?
This is exactly it. Aniston and Sandler have been in too many shitty movies. While they may have many industry friends, there are likely just as many members of the Academy that were against their inclusion because they weren’t considered “respectable” enough.
Also, Aniston wasn’t even that good. Sandler imo was great.
January 24, 2023 at 7:47 am #1205262646Agreed. We should all direct our hostility at Goofy Wig. As someone who thinks she is very talented and who thought she was especially great in Manchester by the Sea…her nomination for The Fabelmans is a complete joke. In a super competitive category with amazing performances to choose from, THAT performance was not one of the Top 5. It simply was. not.
January 24, 2023 at 7:38 am #1205262555Ill never get over people not directing their disappointment and poisoned posts at Michelle Williams. She was nominated in the wrong category. If anything she’s the one that stole Viola’s or Danielle’s spot.
I said this when the “switch” was announced. She definitely just took the spot of a POC. Back then I wasn’t even confident in Yeoh’s chances. Over time it became clear that Yeoh was safe. While I did like The Fabelmans, Michelle’s performance is really cringe-inducing in it. Yes, I suppose that was the point. That is how Spielberg views his mother… 🤣
But let’s be real. Deadwyler’s performance blew white Michelle’s out of the water. IMO Viola was far better than Michelle was well. My controversial take is that De Armas deserves a spot more than Michelle Williams.
But holy shit! Andrea Riseborough really just changed Oscar campaigning. On one hand, she came through as a major major underdog. On the other hand, she confirmed that it really is all about who you know and what kind of friends you have. She may not be A-level but she had A-level friends that pulled through for her. Which really is more important than even the distributor or the size of the movie itself.
