I guess I will be the one to stick up for this season because I’m really loving it while recognizing the shifts between seasons. First of all, this is just a gorgeous show to look at. Regardless of if you think it is style over substance, the style is pretty damn excellent. I don’t find the shift in tone from scene to scene and within each epi…[Read more]

I have been letting this part of the season unfold without commenting too much on here because the usual toxicity of the season has taken me out once again, but I just want to say that Troy Kotsur in “CODA” is probably my favorite performance of the year and I really wasn’t expecting him to be this strong of a presence in the awards season just…[Read more]

As I said weeks ago, I’m still trying to figure out what to take out of my Ensemble lineup to slot in “CODA.” I can see “The Power of the Dog” getting in Cumberbatch, Dunst and Smit-McPhee without the Ensemble nom. I can see “King Richard” missing out due to its subdued buzz in recent weeks. I can see “Don’t Look Up” being the most obvious nominee…[Read more]

Wait wait wait, you think Sony shouldn’t have released “No Way Home” during the holiday season so that…other studios and their films could have a fair shot at box office success?
That’s…not how this works.
As per usual, you guys are way overreacting to an article interviewing people who worked on a movie saying they would like some kind of awa…[Read more]

I had him in my lineup when the predictions center first opened, but have since taken him out. However, given how fluid Supporting Actor is, I may slot him back in soon. If the film were just a little bit stronger, I would be convinced but Elba is beloved and clearly has a strong SAG history.

Finally getting around to putting my thoughts down on this one…
I’ve never seen the stage version of this show, and have only seen the 1961 film once, so I was generally familiar with the beats of the show and the plot, but I didn’t really have a strong connection to it outside of thinking that the 1961 film was really good. By that measure, I…[Read more]

Oops. I completely forgot my current fifth nominee, “West Side Story,” which seems extremely likely to land the nomination.

“CODA” making SAG Ensemble is definitely starting to make more sense, but I don’t know which of “Belfast,” “Don’t Look Up,” “King Richard” and “The Power of the Dog” to take out in its place. “Don’t Look Up” has the worst reviews but the biggest star-studded cast. “TPOTD” has the smallest cast and most of the individual cast members will be c…[Read more]

Yeah, but compared to previous years’ coverage of tweeting out category by category and doing extensive follow-up articles, the coverage this morning has been extremely muted. Maybe that’s just my timeline, but there was undoubtedly a difference between how these nominations were covered in years past from my perspective.

Pretty much no major publications were live tweeting these nominations, and most largely ignored them outside of an article or two posted on a delay, or in some cases writing about the turmoil within the HFPA without even listing nominees. If the press isn’t giving GGs attention, I kind of doubt that voters will either. I guess we’ll see what the…[Read more]

Watched this about a week ago and I’ve got to say that it is probably in contention with “Marriage Story” for being my favorite Netflix original film. I thought the tone of the film was perfectly struck and crescendoed through the intoxicating climax, and even watching at home, I was fully pulled into this world. I’ve been finding it harder than…[Read more]

I unfortunately did not really get into this movie. I saw many of the complaints beforehand that the movie tries to be both campy and deadly serious, and those reactions were correct. If the movie had picked a lane and decided to either go extremely over the top or dry the story out even further, it would’ve at least been a more cohesive film. The…[Read more]

Just kind of throwing this out there and not saying it means anything, but I do find it curious that “Belfast” is now available to rent on PVOD but has been outside of the top ten on iTunes since Friday. I just kind of thought there would be more interest in this film as a current Best Picture frontrunner. A similar Oscars contender with a per…[Read more]

Did I really see someone come in here and try to post half a review of a movie after pausing it eight minutes in?
And then ask a question about another movie eleven minutes later?
Some of y’all really kill me.

Caught this the other night and my overwhelming feeling coming out of the movie is that it really didn’t do anything for me. It was an enjoyable enough experience, and perhaps I was ill prepared knowing that this was a current awards season frontrunner. But even acknowledging the reasons why that narrative exists and separating my enjoyment of the…[Read more]

This unfortunately didn’t do much for me. While there were clear efforts made to make this feel less stagey, it was undeniable to recognize the roots of this work. While interesting character dynamics carried the film for most of its runtime, it wore out its welcome for me by about halfway through the film so that when the plot actually devolves…[Read more]

I thought this was a really good, if not also conventional and by-the-numbers, throwback to the kind of sports movie we used to get a bit more frequently in Hollywood, and was a better version of the stereotypical biopic we still see today to varying degrees of success. The film hits every beat you expect it to, but does it well enough to keep you…[Read more]

I thought this was pretty good with a really big Andrew Garfield performance at its center. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s direction had a nice visual flair in spots, but was occasionally overwhelming. I wasn’t familiar with the musical and the story worked, despite not necessarily being groundbreaking or hitting many unexpected beats. The music is cat…[Read more]

A few pages ago, I wrote about how episode 8 was a bright spot in a pretty bad season and hopefully a sign that the show would stick the landing.
I was wrong, and the stink from the season finale even ruins any good feeling I had toward episode 8.
This was abysmal and I honestly cannot believe that all of the talented forces behind this show…[Read more]
