Cannot deal with the other thread comparing other actresses to Streep, so my 2 cents on what she deserves a win for:
KvK, Sophie’s Choice, Silkwood, Bridges of Madison County, ADAPTATION (which imo was a breakthrough to the next phase of her acting career, also next was Lemony Snickets which is a really underrated and fun performance), Devil Wears Prada and Julie and Julia (her and Stanley Tucci with Nora Ephron’s script depicted one of the most romantic relationships committed to screen).
Also never really got the hate for her Into the Woods and FFJ noms..she is masterful there and always just a step from teetering into too much.November 9, 2018 at 4:58 pm #1202671724
Yup if Colman wins Comedy Globe, the BAFTA is in the bag. Brits will do all they can to give her momentum to win the Oscar.November 4, 2018 at 10:31 am #1202668110
If Colman gets nominated, she’d be the weakest in the line up. She’s highly overrated for playing an ordinary role that’s not special in any way. This season, Colman and Colette are the most overrated.
What is this mess of a post. Colman has the trickiest role out of all the contenders (closely followed by McCarthy) – her performance has been described by multiple people as a masterclass where she grounds the broad outrageous scenes and is the emotional soul of the film. And in a Yorgos Lanthimos film no less where characters aren’t usually afforded more dimensions than the character traits assigned to them.
In no way is she playing something that has been already been brought to screen 4 times and isn’t even the best iteration.

The raves for McCarthy are building and effusive. Think she may be underestimated here especially given her popularity and likeability which are important for campaigning.October 22, 2018 at 8:12 am #1202658944
I saw The Favourite last night and it was quite funny, and exactly what you would expect.
If I were an Oscar strategist, I would put Stone lead, Weisz and Colman supporting. I do think all three will get nominated based on their current placement too, but none of them will win there.
On the personal side of things, the two leads are Stone, and Weisz, and Colman could go either way, I will probably place her in Supporting.
Personal Performance ranking:
Just curious about your reasons for thinking Colman has no chance of winning? Her performance seems to be memorable enough to get over having to share screen time with 2 borderline leads (eg she’s typically described as the soul of the film).October 16, 2018 at 6:18 pm #1202654111

I actually changed my mind. If Olivia Colman and Melissa McCarthy both get in there will be vote splitting for sure. And with Nicole Kidman and viola Davis I have a feeling either one of them is gonna shoot to the top competition when their films come out. So right now This is Lady Gaga’s Oscar but I’m still not sold on her winning actress especially with her basically guaranteed song win.

1.lady Gaga
2. Viola Davis
3. Olivia Colman
4. Nicole Kidman
5.melissa McCarthy
Alt – Saoirse Ronan(starting to get a lot of buzz)

Er why would there be vote splitting between Colman and McCarthy? Very different movies, roles and actor profile.October 15, 2018 at 7:19 pm #1202653394
April seems about right. Assuming they film in order, one of the directors posted a picture that episode 6 started filming last week. Taking into account holidays, they may only wrap in January.October 15, 2018 at 5:53 am #1202652822

Best actress is harder to break into for an un nominated actress ( unless your 20 ( brie larson) or 100 ( jk… but emanuale Riva or Charlotte rampling) colman is in between the ages and i think it will be way harder for her to get the nomination. BSA on the is way easier for all actresses to make the cut and get the nomination

Think Colman is getting the nomination regardless of category. Her raves are immense and the role and performance are said to be very showy and baity. It’s the win that is difficult to predict in Lead.October 9, 2018 at 10:12 pm #1202649677

Who knew Olivia Colman was so thirsty to be considered a leading lady. Good for her but she is several decades late so she should take her chance while it is there and win in Supporting category.

I’m a huge fan of hers but if her request is true, surprising that she has such clout.September 25, 2018 at 4:08 am #1202640945
Did FSL say anything that led to Colman’s placement in supporting as well as lead now?August 28, 2018 at 7:42 am #1202618586
In case there was still doubt, this is totally worth a watch. Fresh, hilarious, well executed that has dark moments.
PWB is good (especially for a writer-actor), as is the whole cast including an absolutely terrific performance from Olivia Colman who gets to redefine passive aggressiveness here.
