The mid-90s had the best run of GF nominations in the history of the Grammys (the BRP had just been installed and was making a huge difference), and it is hard to figure out what to take out of the lineup. But I will NEVER understand “Don’t Speak” being left out of Record and Song. It should have been an easier winner, yet it wasn’t even nominated.
The other I always come back to is “Emotions” by Mariah. She was continually snubbed in the GF through her whole career, but “Emotions” being left out is inexplicable. It’s Carey at her absolute best and it follows significant Grammy success the year before.

Two new musicals started previews. Allegiance marks Lea Salonga’s return to Broadway and did OK, grossing $608,000 for 8 performances with an average ticket of $80.57. Better was the Gloria Estefan juker On Your Feet!, which did $970,000 for 7 performances and an average ticket of $96.54. Dames at Sea is sinking fast at the tiny Helen Hayes, grossing just $194,000 with an average ticket of $46.32. With an attendance rate of 90.1%, looks like there’s a whole lotta paperin’ goin’ on.
Sellouts: Fun Home, Hamilton, The Book of Mormon, The Lion King
I love looking at that list of sellouts and seeing mostly original shows. No jukeboxes. Only one movie adaptation.

When it started to gain awards traction, I felt like I was living in a bizarro world. I have seen twice more, and it gets worse and worse each time.
Other contenders, that don’t come close to the antipathy I feel toward “Crash,” but are still pretty awful:

Oliver!May 6, 2015 at 10:23 am #410943He is basically a younger Usher. Generic, mostly bad music, covered up by appearance and body and an ability to dance. In other words, a female Britney Spears.
But Britney is still relevant 15 years later.
And so is Usher, and it is still based on those same reasons. I am certainly not saying you can’t build a career on generic pop songs and a pretty package.
