Let’s not forget that “Dark Horse” has had enormous staying power (it’s still at #10 on airplay, while “Birthday” is #13). Unless it’s singles 1 and 2, it’s pretty hard for a new single to break out when the previous is still holding on so well.
That being said, I’ve always seen “Birthday” as a novelty song. Like it’s a song people will play at birthday partys, but not at a summer party. I’m shocked she didn’t go with “This Is How We Do” instead.
I’m now surprised she’d go with “Walking On Air” when I feel like everyone heard that song when the album was coming out and it was released as a promo single and she performed it on SNL. I get that she wants to release an upbeat summer track. She should have gone with “This Is How We Do” this time.
I still want “This Moment” as single #6.
