Billie Piper!! Deserved!
I mostly like these nominations, but
- How do you give six nominations to This is Going to Hurt without any of them being for Ambika Mod?
- How do you watch Ellie and Natasia, and just choose one to nominate?
- Love Philomena Cunk, but Diane Morgan should be nommed for Mandy
- For S3, definitely others in the Derry Girls cast I would put above Siobhan McSweeney
Taj Atwal’s hilarious turn in Hullraisers is such a nice surprise.
Interesting that of the three British White Lotus actors they went for Will Sharpe; all three would be deserving but I’m pleasantly surprised, I had predicted Hollander.

February 22, 2023 at 12:55 pm #1205314005I don’t think it’s the end of the world that she missed the ballot for season 1. Jodie Comer was snubbed for Killing Eve’s first season, but then she pulled off a win in the next.
FWIW I’m predicting Gomez to get in.

February 22, 2023 at 12:08 pm #1205313944Haven’t seen Not Dead Yet but wondering if we need to keep an eye out for Gina Rodriguez too. Justice for Jane the Virgin!

February 22, 2023 at 12:04 pm #1205313937Of the two new BBC One dramas, I am leaning a little more towards The Gold over Better, which I thought would be the other way round! Neither are blowing me away, and I’m only one into Better – it just hasn’t grabbed me immediately, though love seeing Leila Farzad outside of her I Hate Suzie role.
The Gold is all over the place with choppy editing and some questionable accents, but is – two episodes in – a lot of fun. I barely recognised Tom Cullen!

February 22, 2023 at 12:02 pm #1205313932I like to throw pne or two 100/1 contenders in to categories at this stage to make it interesting? Who would you all pick?
I have two comedy 100/1s, both of which are relatively SNL adjacent
1. Maya Rudolph for Loot. Yes I know she missed every precursor awards, and yes pretty much everybody’s forgotten about Loot, but the Emmys of the past few years seem to have really loved Maya, whether it’s Kamala or Connie the Hormone Monstress. Plus I’d imagine Loot S2 will be airing during Emmy voting, around the same time as last year. Her performance in the pilot shows she’s more than just a great impressionist and voiceover artist.
I think there’s no clear 5th or 6th behind Brunson, Applegate, Brosnahan and Cardellini. Gomez deserves after S2 but has missed previously, and struggling to see it with Jenna Ortega. Cecily Strong being seventh in the odds is wild to me, and I would LOVE Natasia Demetriou but don’t think it’ll happen. I don’t think Loot will get anything else, but I can see a world where Maya is nominated.
2. Ego Nwodim for Saturday Night Live. This year more than ever I see it. She’s had more breakout moments this year, and is coming into her own as finally one of the show’s leading ladies. For some reason, I think because of her early departure, I don’t see Cecily getting in this year – but I can see a new SNL face in this category and think this will either be Ego or Chloe Fineman (who is being given every impression under the sun, with two Jennifer Coolidge sketches under her belt) – with Ego far more deserving.

February 10, 2023 at 5:36 am #1205299213I haven’t enjoyed much of this season (bar the Keke Palmer episode which was hilarious, the M3GAN parody, and most of Sarah Sherman’s stuff), really feeling the departures of Aidy and now Cecily in particular and haven’t had much host interest, but oh my god I can’t stop watching Lisa from Temecula – between this and her professor character, it is Ego’s year!

February 5, 2023 at 6:49 am #1205284891Haven’t watched Nolly, but gosh how I loved Everyone Else Burns o Channel 4. Yes it is a bit of a “who’s who” of British comedy in its casting (Morgana Robinson, Lolly Adefope, Al from Stath Lets Flats who seems to be turning up in everything), and there were some things that didn’t quite work for me, but overall I liked how it portrayed this sort of community without completely ripping into religion. The pilot in particular was outstanding.
I remember a lot of people here raving around Kate O’Flynn’s performance in Landscapers, which was a show I just didn’t enjoy so it was hard to share that enthusiasm, but she plays a blinder in this and would be my pick for Supporting Comedy Actress in my own personal awards so far this year.
I’m also looking forward to The Gold.

September 3, 2022 at 11:57 am #1205064640Aristotle really seemed like the kind of guy who could bring so many great characters to the show, and then totally disappeared after Christmas. Such a wasted opportunity, and a different sort of loss to the bigger names leaving – he could have absolutely bossed it, but definitely didn’t get the shot the other featured players did.
Melissa had some great moments this year (Colin Jost’s driver!) and Alex I can give or take, but ultimately they were at the end of their six-year runs, and both seem to have other stuff going on anyway.
I still yearn for Mikeys Day and Che to leave; Day is one-note and annoying, and Update needs a refresh.

August 31, 2022 at 12:59 pm #1205060627This actually reminds me that I’d love to see The Big Breakfast win in whichever category is best suited to it – AJ and Mo are a dream together, and just so effing funny. And the interviews… when they got Rita Ora with the “dusty apple”

August 30, 2022 at 11:46 am #1205059109I know that The Newsreader is not BAFTA eligible, but seeing as I just finished the final one on iPlayer, I figured the British TV thread was the best place. I need it to be known that I LOVE IT and I want it to win International Series at BAFTA. Anna Torv, the serve.
Hoping to fit Bad Sisters in to the month of Apple I’ve signed up for.

August 30, 2022 at 11:43 am #1205059106I love the diverse range of shows and performances in your picks Orangestraw! Had never heard of Katla till now but I just googled it and was curious enough about the premise to add it to my list!
Also love the Foy and Dolan love!
My partner is Icelandic, so anything Icelandic gets added to our list automatically! I really loved it, not for everyone but knowing what you like I think you might?
Foy in Scandal is probably my favourite performance of the whole year.
I’ve also loved reading everybody else’s personal awards!

July 18, 2022 at 7:36 am #1205018128Paulson is my personal winner in this category (disclaimer: haven’t seen The Dropout or Maid) and I wasn’t entertaining her even being in the running, though I did chuck her in my predictions as a NGNG pick. I think it’s still Qualley vs Seyfried, but would love to see Paulson.

July 17, 2022 at 5:57 am #1205017419I am so LATE so I’m sure no1curr at this point, but I am so glad to see Issa Rae still got in for Lead Actress as I was beginning to think my prediction was a hopediction after so much time passed. I would have loved to have seen their finale in writing, and I’m so thrilled that Natasha Rothwell got in for White Lotus but she should have done the double! Constantly being robbed for Kelli in Supporting Actress in a Comedy.
Team Janelle James, Severance + WWDITS all the way! I wanna know what the WWDITS actors need to do to get into the acting categories at this point, Novak and Demetriou were doing god-tier work.
Also James Caverly robbed.
