I am debating on Best Film Not in the English Language. I feel that due to the fact Another Round is European it might have the advantage, so I will predict it for now. Might switch to Minari later though.April 6, 2021 at 6:19 pm #1204182807
Every year at least one veteran actor wins an Oscar and Viola Davis seems to fit that bill this year assuming Boseman, Kaluuya, and Youn/Bakalova are our winners.
Yeah… or maybe that veteran’s name is Glenn Close… who knows right?! Anything is still possible…April 6, 2021 at 6:16 pm #1204182800
Well I guess y’all are not disappointed if Carey, Frances, or Vanessa wins.April 6, 2021 at 5:37 pm #1204182734
Here I think that while people (in the AMPAS) really want black actor to win this category, I do think that there may be a chance to split the vote although it also may not be that detrimental to both Davis and Day. In my opinion, the narrative of Davis being part of the history as first (can I say pure?” black actress to win is quite big and the industry is really rooting for that to happen. However, we all know she’s not the centre of the film. In the other hand, there comes Day with solely performance and, may I say, no narrative at all. No matter what you think, the fact that she played Billie Holliday doesn’t really help because the film itself seems almost unlike a tribute, more like a disgrace with its bad review. Therefore, people are divided, whether choosing respected actor with shadowed performance or newcomer with panned film. I think Davis will probably take more votes than Day, but the question is “will the division hinder black dominance in this category?” SPOILER: Kirby wins.
LOL I’m rooting for Mulligan but to be honest I would not be mad if Kirby wins… she was magnificent in POAW.April 6, 2021 at 3:06 pm #1204182460
CC – Carey AACTA = Carey GG Drama – Day GG Comedy – Pike SAG – Davis BAFTA – Someone new Have we ever had a race like this in the lead categories? The major precursors splitting like this is truly incredible.
This might be a first, it’s only fitting with last year being so chaotic it had to mirror on the awards races.April 6, 2021 at 3:04 pm #1204182456
OK, please. If anyone’s chances have been dismissed, then Viola’s, not Carey’s. People keep bringing up the same reasons as to why Viola can’t, can’t, can’t. She and Chad are also just the third pair of leads to win at SAG. Stats are meant to be broken!
I remember at the beginning of the season there was buzz for Viola winning a second Oscar. Then I watched Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, and while I thought she was good I thought Chadwick was even better. Now that she won SAG I’m not going to deny she is surging but it might not be enough in the end. Or it might be, I’d be fine if she wins. She’s a great actress after all.April 6, 2021 at 2:56 pm #1204182436
I love it when people dismiss Carey’s chances when she and Frances are the only 2 actresses in Best Picture nominees. If anything, Carey is ahead because they’re already giving Frances an Oscar for producing Nomadland and she’s not getting 2 Oscars in one night. Andra Day is great but being the sole nominee of her film doesn’t help her. Viola is also great but her biggest obstacle is that Chadwick is a lock and most likely a film that wasn’t nominated for Best Picture won’t win two acting Oscars.April 6, 2021 at 2:46 pm #1204182413
Carey Mulligan is still pretty much in the game. We’ll see who has the last laugh.April 4, 2021 at 7:32 pm #1204177447
I placed #10 with 100% correct picks on the TV side. I’m so proud of myself. Now my film predictions were just bad lol
