Curious about Nishijima. I’m not at all convinced Bardem is making it all the way to the Oscars, and with release/visibility issues continuing to plague Cyrano, I think it’s possible Nishijima rides a Drive My Car love wave into the fifth slot.

We’re seriously discussing the possibility of a Power of the Dog snub?
Has the season really already gotten THAT boring?

I quite liked Nightmare Alley, and I would be very happy to see Blanchett get in (her nod was the only good surprise at SAG lol), but yeah, I don’t think she’s happening. Again, never say never, but this is a classic case of SAG name checking a veteran that the Oscars won’t look twice at.
It’s still pandemic times. I don’t think anyone really cares about the streaming distinction anymore. I mean,
most are predicting TPOTD for most of the major categories. And Being the Ricardos was released in theaters, granted not super widely, but about as much as Nomadland and Judas were, both of which were basically streaming releases.
Kidman wouldn’t be a bad winner necessarily, but there are so many phenomenal other performances in this category that I’d be hugely disappointed if hers was the one they chose. Never mind the performances that have been getting paid dust like Comer and Thompson; Colman, Stewart, and Chastain ran laps around her. Kidman also pumps out award-worthy…[Read more]

Significant contenders I still haven’t seen that could end up here: Benedetta, Cyrano, Flee, The Green Knight, Jockey, Mass, Nine Days, Petite Maman, Test Pattern, The Worst Person in the World
Best Picture – Drive My Car
The French Dispatch
The Power of the Dog
The Tragedy of M…[Read more]

I wouldn’t be shocked to see it get in just because Wes Anderson is so well-liked, and the film itself is popular enough, but I think it has enough detractors (and those dectractors’ biggest complaint is its screenplay) that the film will get nominated for its strengths, i.e. Production Design/Score/Costumes and miss out here.

Now having seen Drive My Car, I can confirm that it should be winning in a landslide. Unfortunately it won’t because Janus is such a weak studio for campaigns, but I’m now confident that it’ll be nominated. Its main obstacle right now is definitely visibility, but that’s what free screeners are for, and the people who have seen it will probably be…[Read more]

Donald Sutherland in Ordinary People
Since it’s pretty unlikely Anthony Hopkins would attend the ceremony, I would love to see Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon present Best Actress to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Thelma & Louise.

I think Tick Tick Boom and Being the Ricardos will hit PGA but be replaced by Macbeth and Drive My Car at the Oscars.

I meant that Pugh had only been missing at the places where Little Women had been underperforming overall. It was only nominated for Saoirse and Score at the Globes and was totally blanked at SAG. However, in the places where the film did well (Critics Choice and BAFTA), Pugh made it. We expected Little Women’s Oscar haul to mimic its…[Read more]

My predicted nomination count for each Picture nominee:
DUNE (10) – Picture, Director, Cinematography, Costume Design, Editing, Makeup and Hair, Production Design, Score, Sound, Visual Effects
THE POWER OF THE DOG (10) – Picture, Director, Actor, Supporting Actress, Supporting Actor x2, Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, Editing, Sco…[Read more]
To call the race for anyone at this point feels wrong. I could be wrong, but I don’t see Kidman sweeping this easily; I think still we’re in for another long, confusing season of multiple winners.
