Is the excitement a reference to the US context only or to international hype?
I definitely see it as US/UK centric. I’m not in the US or Europe, and my two sessions were empty (one had 7 people and 3 walked out, the other had around 10). The movie is not being talked about here except on Twitter and by a specific demographic (Gaga fans / pop music fans). A lot of critics here really trashed it. But who knows.November 28, 2021 at 4:45 pm #1204611211
I think there’s a remote chance of House of Gucci getting nominated for Best Picture because it’s the first movie in 2 years that created such buzz and excitement. It would be a way to “honor” this achievement.
If we’d look at it purely from a technical point of view, it would only get noms for costume/make up. The editing sucks, the screenplay is bad and Ridley Scott dropped the ball as a director. But we’ve seen over and over mediocre-to-bad movies getting nominations (and even winning), so who knows.November 28, 2021 at 4:38 pm #1204611201
Gaga and Kristen are locks.
I’m interested to see how Netflix is going to choose. It’s interesting that they’re giving special attention to The Lost Daughter, maybe they’re really going for Colman instead of Thompson.November 28, 2021 at 3:44 am #1204610268
Olivia Colman’s speech was iconic.
So many great moments: “this is hilarious, I’ve got an Oscar”, saying her husband was going to cry, talking to her kids at home and saying that was not going to happen again, “a massive snog”…November 28, 2021 at 3:35 am #1204610264
To those who saw Titane: would you recommend it? The impression I’ve gotten from reviews is that it’s not for the faint of heart.
It’s bonkers and I absolutely loved it, but it’s not for everyone. If you’re not into horror/surrealism/just overall batshit crazy & graphic stuff, I don’t recommend it.November 28, 2021 at 3:32 am #1204610261
Finally watched Spencer and, unsurprisingly, Stewart blew me away! I loved the film overall and find it baffling that it’s not sitting at a 90+ on metacritic. The cinematography and score were other standouts and both are winworthy. I also thought Sally Hawkins was a revelation who should totally be in the conversation for a nomination. Overall, I can’t decide whose performance I love more between Tessa Thompson and Kristen Stewart, but if Stewart does pull it off I’ll be so happy for her.
I’m also torn between both of them! Tessa was my favorite, but I sadly don’t see her gaining momentum for a nom. And Kristen was excellent. I’m really happy for her because she deserves this recognition after getting so much hate for all those years.November 28, 2021 at 3:27 am #1204610254
because you’re acting like they didn’t mean for the sex scene to be funny…
I’m discussing the dissonance between the PR and the screen (describing the chemistry and scene as “hot”), and the tonal dissonance within the movie itself. It is a funny movie but some scenes come across as “is this supposed to be funny or is it just bad?” because the editing and direction left a lot to be desired.
To me, it came across as ridiculous and I didn’t believe for a second that those two people were madly in love. I’ve read the book years ago and I was eager to see it on screen, and I was disappointed. And considering I paid for my own tickets, I care more about my own opinion that yours (or anyone else’s, for that matter). You just seem upset that people didn’t connect with the movie the way you wanted them to. Which is funny, because people here are the first to claim “art is subjective” when it’s about defending their faves.November 27, 2021 at 5:11 pm #1204609815
Hopefully Tessa wins because she deserves some recognition (even if small) for her wonderful work in Passing.November 27, 2021 at 5:02 pm #1204609803
it was supposed to be all the things. Ridley told her to fck him like a man. It was supposed to be wild and unhinged. Because they were crazy about each other in the beginning. Sorry you never had that feeling lol
jesus you’re beyond stupid. You’re not getting it at all…
Why are you so defensive about this? It’s “wild and unhinged” but it came across as comical due to the camera framing, the use of music, the over-the-top acting and the overall atmosphere of the movie. There are way better sex scenes out there, and even Gaga and Driver had better scenes with other actors in previous works. It’s so strange to attack people just because they didn’t react to a scene or a couple the way you wanted them to.November 27, 2021 at 4:47 pm #1204609787
To objective members of this forum, how do reviews seem so far? Is it more a case of “polarized” i.e. critics either love this thing or hate it? or more “meh”/lukewarm?
This movie is divisive. Some people will love it and some people will hate it. The critics were fair and I might even say they were generous; they rightfully criticized the parts that didn’t work but praised what did (Gaga). Critics are critics; they pay attention to details and technical stuff that most general audiences don’t care about. The movie is flawed on crucial things (editing, screenplay, sound design, some directional aspects) but Gaga saves it with her charm. If this movie didn’t have Gaga in it, it would get panned. People who are into Gaga and her acting style are going to like this because she steals the scene. People who don’t care about her that much are prone to notice the film’s flaws more than her charm.November 27, 2021 at 4:40 pm #1204609777
Someone is salty, lol, you don’t need to be a sex expert to see that scene was funny as hell, and is definitely not a great sex scene, The Notebook has better sex scenes, Doctor Zhivago has better sex scenes.
For real! People hyped up this scene so much as “hot” and “amazing”, so I was expecting something on the level of Blue is the Warmest Color or even similar to Driver’s previous work in Girls. And then… it was that. It’s funny af. I watched the movie twice and both times people laughed in the cinema.November 26, 2021 at 3:37 pm #1204608298
I really want to watch Licorice Pizza 😭 PTA is one of my favorite directors.November 26, 2021 at 12:57 pm #1204608097
My predictions so far:
- Kristen Stewart
- Lady Gaga
- Olivia Colman
- Penelope Cruz
- Tessa Thompson
I can sort of see Kidman & Chastain getting there as well.November 26, 2021 at 12:36 pm #1204608062
Based on what’s on screen and not on PR promos, the editing of the movie and how each actor approached their role affected how I perceived the chemistry. It did nothing for me, and I adore Gaga and Driver individually.
I’d have a different opinion if the movie actually allowed them to develop their relationship at a slower pace and allowed us to understand their bond beyond the first 5 minutes. It’s not about how “cute” or “hot” they look together, but how the actors and the story interact 🤷November 26, 2021 at 7:18 am #1204607594
I actually read the book and that was one of the many reasons I was eager to see the movie. There were a lot of opportunities they missed to explore the characters individually and enrich the story (i.e. Maurizio’s fear of HIV, Patrizia’s history with high society men, Pina and Patrizia’s friendship). And also, other aspects were completely erased (where’s Allegra?).
My point still stands: the actors lacked chemistry and the script was weak. Each actor was doing their own thing instead of working as a team, and the final product suffered for it. To top it off, the editing didn’t allow us to stay with them and actually see their relationship evolving. When Maurizio and Patrizia got divorced I just shrugged.
I disagree that Gaga fully embodied Patrizia. I think she tried and I applaud her for it, but I wasn’t convinced. The only scene that she pulled it off 100% was the final one, at the trial. It’s a shame that the movie didn’t explore Patrizia post-murder; it would have been amazing to see Patrizia’s descent into madness.
Driver lacked energy in his acting; he played awkward/shy characters before (see Paterson or Logan Lucky) and still managed to be engaging. Not here. I simply didn’t care about Maurizio because we did not spend any alone time with him to fully understand his desires and motivations—when we did, it was all about business & the Gucci empire.
Gaga will still get her nom, though. If it were not for her, the movie would be unwatchable. Not now
