Hmmm I think a lot of those songs are stronger in ROTY. Namely “Sunflower,” “Talk,” “Sucker,” and “Señorita.” And then there’s “Old Town Road.” Also, it wouldn’t be obscene if Ariana and/or Lizzo only got into ROTY either…
And I have a hard time predicting a lot of those songs because they are simply so bad lol
I think Halsey and those country boys will be non-factors in the GF.
I’m rooting for 21 Savage to get into SOTY, but I’m doubtful.August 22, 2019 at 7:57 am #1203034921
It’s interesting that Hits is pegging “Someone You Loved” for dual GF nominations. I personally think it’s just getting in Song. The arrangement is very sparse and, imo, Capaldi’s vocal performance is pretty whiny.
It’s sooo whiny! Nearly unlistenable. And it’s a pretty standard vanilla ballad. Any other year, I’d say it would be forgotten. But I’m struggling to come up with 5 nominees for SOTY this year, never mind 8!August 21, 2019 at 10:33 am #1203033492
A Star Is Born could easily miss out on Grammy nominations a year later. That being said, wherever it happens to get in, it immediately becomes a formidable contender to win, including AOTY.
The vast majority of people being predicted for AOTY (including by me) have no shot of actually winning: Ariana, Lizzo, Khalid, Tyler the Creator, Solange, Anderson .Paak, etc.
Billie is the strongest pop contender but is she really going to sweep and win AOTY for that debut? Really? I’m not buying that just yet. She seems like a stronger bet in BNA and ROTY.
So then we have to think about potential dark horse contenders who might sneak in like Bruce Springsteen, Gary Clark Jr, Vampire Weekend… idk.
If they leave out the rock/alt contenders, I think Gaga and Bradley could have it in the bag.August 21, 2019 at 10:24 am #1203033486
The National and Vampire Weekend could slip into those rock categories with the right submission.
I’d go with “Light Years” for The National. “This Life,” “Harmony Hall,” or “Sunflower” would all work for Vampire Weekend.
Bon Iver will probably be submitted to Pop Duo/Group and Vampire Weekend could arguably submit there as well. Both stand little chance of getting in that crowded category though.August 17, 2019 at 9:38 am #1203027951
Christ y’all suck. No wonder all the good posters have left.
Besides Ariana and Billie, who’s getting into AOTY?August 14, 2019 at 12:06 pm #1203023800
Most of my fav wins are in Best Alternative Album:
Radiohead, Ok Computer (1998), Kid A (2001), In Rainbows (2009)
Bon Iver, Bon Iver (2012)
Vampire Weekend, Modern Vampires of the City (2014)
St. Vincent, St. Vincent (2015)
The National, Sleep Well Beast (2018)
Lauryn Hill, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill wins AOTY (1999)
Dixie Chicks’ sweep in 2007
Amy Winehouse’s near-sweep in 2008
Lady Gaga, The Fame Monster wins Pop Album (2011)
The War on Drugs, A Deeper Understanding wins Rock Album (2018)
Ariana Grande, Sweetener wins Pop Album (2018)August 14, 2019 at 8:10 am #1203023443
Realized I forgot about Homecoming… Does anyone think that stands a chance at this point?August 14, 2019 at 8:05 am #1203023436
I suspect the 8 nominees for AOTY will probably come from this bunch of 13. We’ve talked ad nauseam about how those two pop contenders are the strongest bets. Did I get any of the other category submissions wrong? I know there’s been talk about Solange in the R&B thread. I assume Anderson .Paak will submit to Urban Contemporary and Gary Clark Jr. will submit to Traditional Blues, as they have both done in the past. What about Lizzo? That being said, I don’t see more than 2, maybe 3, contenders nominated from any given field.
Thank U, Next– Ariana Grande
When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?– Billie Eilish
-Don’t think Jonas Brothers are strong enough here and have a better chance in ROTY & SOTY. Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift will be looked over again. Maggie Rogers seems like a BRP-friendly choice, but her album has no big hits and its not undeniably acclaimed.
Cuz I Love You– Lizzo
Free Spirit– Khalid
Ventura– Anderson .Paak
When I Get Home– Solange
-This could go in a lot of different directions, though Solange is probably the weakest here. I could potentially see Khalid only getting into ROTY or SOTY for “Talk” instead.
A Star Is Born– Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper
-Does the BRP really love this movie/Gaga? We shall see!
Igor– Tyler, the Creator
-Is Chance the Rapper out? Seems like his album didn’t meet expectations and Tyler, the Creator is the strongest rap contender this year. I don’t see the BRP going for 21 Savage.
This Land– Gary Clark Jr.
-I personally think the title track has a better shot at ROTY & SOTY than the album does at AOTY. There have been comparisons to “This is America” and “Formation.”
Father of the Bride– Vampire Weekend
I, I– Bon Iver
-Vampire Weekend won for its last album and they have garnered a lot of industry cred over the course of their career. Bon Iver, a BNA winner, released another critically acclaimed album, the final installment of a cycle of albums representing the changing seasons (arguably some of the most acclaimed albums of the century). Both bands still have a cool factor as two of the last “bands still standing from the mega-indie era,” while also being accessible to traditional (white) voters. The National and Thom Yorke would also be worthy left-field choices, but I think they have less going for them. The 1975 have only been nominated for Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package in the past and I don’t see them jumping to AOTY without any big hits. I don’t really see any viable rock contenders unless BRP decides to hand this award to Bruce Springsteen.
GIRL– Maren Morris
Country Squire– Tyler Childers
-Tyler Childers just released his album to great reviews and its produced by Sturgil Simpson. Maren Morris is super well-liked in the industry. I don’t see why the BRP would suddenly go for Eric Church this year, so I left him off.August 14, 2019 at 7:37 am #1203023398
Solange’s album is great. Deserves to be in AOTY too.August 13, 2019 at 12:24 pm #1203022205
“Bad Guy” is a good song and better than 9/10 other contenders mentioned here.
These Lorde comparisons are silly too.August 12, 2019 at 10:50 am #1203020712
Duffy’s debut album was stronger than Adele’s.
Radiohead, Coldplay, and Lil Wayne all deserved to win AOTY more than Robert Plant & Alison Krauss in 2009. That album is a snooze. And “Please Read the Letter” was by far the worst nominee in ROTY.
Channel Orange should’ve won AOTY in 2013 obviously, but Babel was the next best choice.
Britney Spears should have more than one Grammy.August 11, 2019 at 12:31 pm #1203019612
Best Alternative Album is packed with former winners!
ANIMA– Thom Yorke
Father of the Bride– Vampire Weekend
I Am Easy to Find– The National
I, I– Bon Iver
I think these 4 are safe bets.August 11, 2019 at 12:14 pm #1203019591
Current SOTY predictions:
“Bad Guy” (Billie Eilish)
“Thank U, Next” (Ariana Grande)
“Truth Hurts” (Lizzo)
“Someone You Loved” (Lewis Capaldi)
“Sucker” (Jonas Brothers)
“Hey Look Ma, I Made It” (Panic! At the Disco)
“Earfquake” (Tyler, the Creator)
“This Land” (Gary Clark Jr.)
It would really be cool to see songs like “Hope Is a Dangerous Thing for a Woman Like Me to Have – but I Have It” by Lana, Almeda” by Solange and/or “This Life” by Vampire Weekend to make it in here, but that’s wishful thinking and the latter two really only have a shot at AOTY in the GF.August 11, 2019 at 11:46 am #1203019575
This time last year I was told I was delusional and smoking crack because I was talking up Ariana’s chances in the pop field. After she was nominated, the same damn people said she had no shot at winning. Even now that she won, everyone’s repeating the same stale takes. Those who pretend like you are some expert at predicting this meaningless award show each year are so stale. It’s not that deep.
Ariana will do just fine. She could end up winning 1-3 Grammys or lose them all. We shall see.
