FKA Twigs looked great on the Grammy stage and there’s been some media coverage about how she wasn’t asked to sing herself. MAGDALENE is amazing and could be a long-shot contender for AOTY.
Artists to look out for:
Greta Van Fleet
White Hot Fever – Lana Del Rey
Gaslighter – The Dixie Chicks
Future Nostalgia – Dua Lipa
The Slow Rush – Tame Impala
Petals for Armor – Hayley Williams
Miss_Anthrop0cene – Grimes
Meghan Thee Stallion (BNA)
Doja Cat (BNA)
Caroline Polachek (BNA)
Soccer Mommy (BNA)January 28, 2020 at 11:31 am #1203316875
My personal picks for AOTY each of the last ten years would have been:
2011 – The Fame Monster
2012 – 21
2013 – El Camino
2014 – good kid, m.A.A.d city
2015 – Morning Phase (very mediocre year, though – didn’t love any of these albums)
2016 – To Pimp a Butterfly
2017 – Lemonade
2018 – DAMN.
2019 – Golden Hour (Dirty Computer a very, very close second)
2020 – Norman Fucking Rockwell!
Ok wow I agree with all of these except for Channel Orange in 2013, Beyoncé in 2015, and maybe Melodrama in 2018 (if Kendrick had been awarded in both 2014 and 2016). Beyoncé and Kendrick are the artists of the decade IMHO and deserved multiple wins. Damn shame they got 0.January 27, 2020 at 12:26 pm #1203314867
I would’ve gone with different winners in the GF categories, especially AOTY, but I’m a fan of Billie’s and think “bad guy” is fantastic. Good for her!
Weird that the winner of ROTY and SOTY couldn’t win Pop Solo, but I’m glad Lizzo had her moment. I concur that they should’ve announced Pop Duo/Group live to give Lil Nas X his moment too. Announcing Comedy Album was stupid af
The show was way too long and bloated with unnecessary performances, but I honestly love Alicia Keys as host and hope she continues.January 26, 2020 at 11:13 am #1203306537
Ya know, why not take a crazy chance? No guts no glory — changed AOTY to Vampire Weekend and BPV to Ariana.
Billie will probably win both lolJanuary 24, 2020 at 11:54 am #1203302633
Billie is clearly the frontrunner for AOTY. But I still have a hunch that Vampire Weekend could upset.
And I’m going with “Truth Hurts” in SOTY, but “Bad Guy” could easily snatch that one away.January 23, 2020 at 11:09 am #1203300489
Where are Lana, Vampire Weekend, and Bon Iver??? What about Bad Bunny? This lineup is bad.January 21, 2020 at 9:45 am #1203296527
“Higher” seems like a sure bet in Best Rap/Sung, but I wouldn’t count out J. Cole or even DaBaby in the other categories. Though I surely wouldn’t be shocked if Nipsey sweeps.January 9, 2020 at 7:32 am #1203272017
Current thoughts for each category:
1. WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?
2. Father of the Bride
3. Norman Fucking Rockwell!
1. “Old Town Road”
2. “Truth Hurts”
3. “Bad Guy”
1. “Truth Hurts”
2. “Bad Guy”
1. Billie Eilish
3. Maggie Rogers
Really torn between “Truth Hurts” vs. “Bad Guy.” SOTY is hardest to predict for me and I think there could be an upset. Unless Billie sweeps all 4 lolNovember 27, 2019 at 10:43 am #1203206042
Billie will likely win. But as usual, Ariana is being underestimated despite getting into Pop Duo/Group with a flop single over major hits… Still feel like there is sympathy and good will for Ariana. People discounted her win for Sweetener last year, but it’s pretty apparent that Ariana is well respected for her how she has handled consecutive hardship with such grace and resiliency.November 22, 2019 at 10:46 am #1203197331
On paper, it looks like Billie Eilish has what she needs to win. Her album got into Best Engineered Album and her brother is nominated for Producer of the Year for producing her album alone… who votes for the nominations in those categories?
That being said, it still seems weird to me that she would win a popular vote among this bunch of artists. She’s certainly a pop artist, but super young, and her whispery scary alt pop isn’t what voters generally go for.
Vampire Weekend and Bon Iver will definitely split votes, but I’d argue Vampire Weekend is much more accessible to the masses. Just look at the titles of the Bon Iver songs.
Predicting Billie Eilish makes sense… I have a hunch about Vampire Weekend… But really think all of them besides Lil Nas X and H.E.R. have a chance.November 22, 2019 at 10:33 am #1203197320
All the people who are predicting Vampire Weekend or Bon Iver wins are not the people who actually listen to this type of music and listened to the albums in full, these people just recognize that this is famous “serious” white people music that sound like plausible winners. People who actually love indie music are mostly very mehhh about these albums and won’t be voting for them. People who don’t love indie music wouldn’t be voting for them in the first place. Contra and Self Titled are far superior to the new VW, and For Emma, Forever Ago is far superior to i,i.
You keep repeating this nonsense. It doesn’t make a difference whether you like their older albums better or not. And for what it’s worth, Vampire Weekend’s last album is toward the top of every decade-end list, as is Bon Iver’s second (and even third on some lists). Both of their latest efforts were critically acclaimed and deserve to be nominated.November 20, 2019 at 8:17 am #1203192050
Hey, Ma in ROTY is so weird to me, but I love Bon Iver. Despite that BRP pick, I think Vampire Weekend is a stronger bet for Alt Album, having also gotten into Best Rock Song.
I’d vote for Lana or VW in AOTY, but I think the race is wide open.
