Lana has gotten into PVA before with much less hype. Will be a bigger challenge to get into AOTY, but I’m betting on it.
I also feel like Maggie Rogers could surprise, but she just seems so obviously weaker than Billie, Ariana, Gaga, AND Lana…November 7, 2019 at 10:14 am #1203169899
Lizzo checks every box. There’s no reason why she should miss AOTY.October 9, 2019 at 12:03 pm #1203129720
There are several locks for AOTY and this year ain’t that weak. Could prove to be very competitive to win.October 9, 2019 at 8:20 am #1203129292
I’m currently predicting Sam Smith in Pop Duo/Group. But it would also not be surprising at all if he misses out.October 9, 2019 at 7:51 am #1203129223
I’d like to see “Dancing With a Stranger” in ROTY because Sam Smith and Normani are soooo much better than some of these other contenders, but I’m still skeptical it will get into Pop Duo/Group.October 9, 2019 at 7:48 am #1203129217
Paul Grein’s ROTY predictions:
Billie Eilish – “Bad Guy”
Lizzo – “Truth Hurts”
Ariana Grande – “7 Rings”
Halsey – “Without Me”
Post Malone & Swae Lee – “Sunflower”
Khalid – “Talk” and/or Ed Sheeran feat. Khalid – “Beautiful People”
Jonas Brothers – “Sucker”
Lil Nas X feat. Billy Ray Cyrus – “Old Town Road”
Ok… these aren’t that bad?
I don’t think “Beautiful People” has a shot and I am not buying the Halsey predictions, but 6-7 of those other songs are what everyone else is predicting…? Surely less delusional than those still predicting “You Need to Calm Down.”
In my current predictions, I have 7/8 of these with “This Land” instead of “Without Me” and Sucker” in 8th place.
Does anyone take Halsey seriously? People kept trying to make her happen last year with “Bad at Love” and she was also snubbed for “Closer.”
In my mind, “Someone You Love” and “Senorita” are also mediocre songs that can easily be passed over in ROTY. Despite being a “Feel It Still” knockoff, “Sucker” has had impressive longevity and their album is one of the best sellers of the year with decent reviews.October 4, 2019 at 10:38 am #1203121270
Lana’s Pop Album nomination in 2014 was not a really competitive year. There weren’t a lot of other strong options besides JT, Bruno, and Lorde, and she had a hit right before deadline.
Alright well, she at least beat out AOTY nominee Sara Bareilles for that last slot… which makes one think she might have been top 20 for AOTY.
And using that logic: same case with Lorde in 2018 as well!October 4, 2019 at 8:29 am #1203121048
ALSO I think there’s an outside chance Maggie Rogers overperforms and gets in 2-3 GF categories. Not predicting that, but she’s the type of gal they go for.October 4, 2019 at 8:22 am #1203121011
For AOTY, I’m pretty set on predicting these six: Billie, Ariana, Lizzo, Gaga, Tyler, the Creator, and Gary Clark Jr.
I would not be surprised at all if the BRP decides to leave out A Star Is Born, but the album is a huge hit and honestly deserves it.
Then there are those last two spots. My guess is that it’s between Lana, Vampire Weekend, Anderson Paak, Khalid, and Solange.
Khalid has had a huge year, but I agree with those who are skeptical that he’ll be in all 3 top categories. “Talk” is clearly the highlight.
I would love to see Solange get in, but I also agree that her album came and went, and it’s less accessible than her last one. I still think “Almeda” could pop up in SOTY though.
I think Lana is in. She has a lot of fans in the industry, including the likes of Bruce Springsteen, and she has a good narrative. Lana keeps outdoing herself and proving the naysayers wrong. And she’s managed to sneak into Pop Vocal Album in very competitive years. Hope is a dangerous thing to have… but I have it!
I will likely go back and forth between Anderson Paak and Vampire Weekend for the last slot. Right now I’m thinking Vampire Weekend. I’m biased as a fan, but I think there is underrated goodwill for Ezra Koenig and the band in the industry. This is their fourth consecutive critically acclaimed album and it’s their most accessible yet.October 2, 2019 at 11:23 am #1203117782
I think “Señorita” can easily be left out of ROTY. And even more so with “Without Me.”October 1, 2019 at 8:36 am #1203115832
I hate to say it, but if a “big name” is going to be snubbed in the GF, it could very well be Gaga. The BRP is either going to line up A Star is Born for a potential win in AOTY or leave it out because they see it as old news.October 1, 2019 at 7:16 am #1203115637
Still struggling with SOTY.
What are people’s arguments for ROTY contenders like “Sunflower,” “Talk” getting into SOTY? Neither of them seems worthy to me, but I can’t get to 8 otherwise.
Also, is there any precedent for a song like “Light On” getting into SOTY? A non-hit by a moderately acclaimed new artist…September 27, 2019 at 7:59 am #1203107827

My thoughts on BNA broken into tiers:
Lil Nas X
Megan Thee Stallion
Next in line/left-field contenders:
BlackpinkSeptember 26, 2019 at 8:37 am #1203104595
“7 Rings” is the holy trifecta of things they DON’T look for in SOTY contenders: lyrically lightweight, repetitive, and based on a sample. I have no clue what they were thinking.
I can’t believe they’re doing this again. What are they thinking? I will shriek if “7 Rings” was submitted to Pop Solo as well.
