I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Guest acting performer (in comedy or drama) be as a much of a frontrunner as Nick Offerman is. From the moment that episode premiered in January people have been rooting for him to win and he remains firmly in the lead even after all the Succession buzz.
If he loses, I call chicanery.

May 30, 2023 at 10:09 pm #1205446108The Great s3 is indeed kinda lacking of buzz but Elle Fanning is campaigning so hard that I think she’ll get in. I also think Hoult is more likelier than Segel, but Glover is a wildcard for the sixth slot.
I think the thing to keep in mind about Glover is that not only is he a previous winner who has never missed, but he’s also fucking Donald Glover. The man is a megastar beloved all over the industry. Plus, I think the industry still has some Atlanta fans holding on tight who could get him in.

May 30, 2023 at 8:31 pm #1205446041Who are your ideal realistic winners. For example I’m championing Michael Emerson and Simone Kessell but neither of them are winning let’s be real.
Well, it’s hard to say what’s “realistic” since Succession is almost definitely winning Series, but of the likely nominees, mine would be:
Series: Better Call Saul
Actress: Bella Ramsey
Actor: Bob Odenkirk
Supp. Actor: Stellan Skarsgård
Supp. Actress: Rhea Seehorn
Writing: “Saul Gone” – Better Call Saul
Directing: “When You’re Lost in the Darkness” – The Last of Us

Well, if you had to pick, which one would you say was the weakest?

May 29, 2023 at 2:49 pm #1205444968Per category, voters can only select as many their will be individual nominations (e.g. you can only pick 8 potential nominees in Drama Series). For the past 6 ceremonies prior, voters could select as many (or as little) as they wanted it. One could only list Succession on their ballot, 25 shows and every single show in the ballot if they wanted.
The main issue with the unlimited ballot is that is disproportionately benefits popular shows with large ensembles. Let’s say a voter’s favorite show was The Good Fight and they really wanted Christine Baranski to be nominated, but they also enjoyed Succession and The White Lotus. That voter would obviously check off Baranski, but they may also check off all the major (or even minor) characters on Succession and TWL because, well, why not? It’s unlimited, after all.
But the problem is that because these popular shows are well liked enough by many voters, their casts will likely appear on most ballots even if they weren’t necessarily their “favorite” performances, leaving smaller passion-picks like Baranski to struggle to break in due to their lack of general popularity outside of their fanbase.

May 29, 2023 at 9:25 am #1205444580I liked the finale overall, but I definitely have some issues with it. My biggest being Gene going to prison. I get it’s supposed to be tragic or whatever, but I simply do not buy that Jim Moss would come to believe that Gene was responsible for Barry’s crimes. He did that weird garage interrogation with Gene last season and got him to admit that Barry killed Janice. But because Gene’s “a good actor”, Jim just decides that his army-trained interrogation skills didn’t work and the man he’s been hunting for 8 years is actually innocent? It just felt like a contrived way to get Gene in prison when that’s not really what the rest of the season had been building towards. I did like that Gene got to be the one who killed Barry in the end though.
Probably my favorite part of the episode was Sally’s ending. I thought it was a truly beautiful conclusion for that character and mostly justified the time jump for me.

May 29, 2023 at 6:44 am #1205444444I wasn’t aware ‘Ms. Marvel’ was eligible too.
In a weaker year, I would’ve loved to have seen Iman Vellani get in. She brought so much charm and personality to that character despite this being her first ever role.

May 28, 2023 at 10:20 pm #1205444201I think Smith-Cameron is so peripheral to the story this year, though. I don’t really think Menzies is a good alt, he makes sense in the structure of the family/show. She is probably more peripheral than any of the GoT women in their final season.
Yeah, if it wasn’t for her being nominated last year, nobody would even be talking about it. I know she has her fans (I actually really like Gerri from what I’ve seen), but it would bs if she won for this season.

May 28, 2023 at 9:52 pm #1205444164Very excited for this! I know it’s Showtime, but with the talent on and off screen as well as the lack of competition from the strike, I could see this being a major Emmy player.

May 28, 2023 at 9:05 pm #1205444133J Smith Cameron – she did nothing the whole season so idk
I’m starting to wonder if she’ll even get in. I know Succession is a juggernaut, but unless it’s the only show you watch, who’s gonna vote for her on a limited ballot when there are so many deserving performances this year.
