Americans are absolutely rubbish at non-American accents. Zellweger of course aside, and I’ll throw in Paltrow in Sliding Doors. But I can’t think of many others, other than where the person grew up in that language/accent background (like Yeun in Minari, or e.g. Latina actresses or Jewish actors doing accents from their upbringing). But Daveed Diggs’ overbaked Lafayette or DiCaprio murdering a Saffer accent in Blood Diamond or Kate Mulgrew in OITNB? Dick van Dyke? Pacino in The Local Stigmatic? I mean.
Fanning gets a pass in The Great, maybe Stone in The Favourite, but you don’t get too many points for doing a passable version of the only two standard British accents known by Americans – RP/posh London, and hyper-cockney.
Is this an unpopular opinion?
Anyway, in the converse, I can usually tell when a non-American takes on an “American” accent and I’m usually not impressed.

Also, I bet you the remake will film “Something Wonderful” much better than the original film did. It was kind of a throwaway song in the original film, but in the Broadway revival, it stopped the show completely and became a highlight. A lot of it was how they staged it. There’s a reason why Ruthie Ann Miles won a Tony for the often ignored role of Lady Thiang.
I also want them to put back “Western People Funny” and “Shall I Tell You What I Think of You?” among others that were cut. I also think the pacing could be improved from the original film which was kind of plodding and then woke up with the “Small House of Uncle Thomas” ballet.
Cutting “Shall I Tell You What I Think of You?” in the original was a huge mistake. That could have been a show-stopper for Deborah Kerr and it was one of the best dubbing jobs Hollywood ever did. Kerr mixed her voice with Marni Nixon perfectly and both worked to make sure their voices sounded as similarly and naturally as possible.
The above makes me mad that they didn’t just tell Audrey Hepburn from the beginning she was going to be dubbed for My Fair Lady. Then they could have worked together like Kerr and Nixon did in the same way. Instead, they chose to trick her and make her find out later on while filming they were going to dub her AFTER they had her record all of her songs and then SHOOT her scenes to her own recordings having her think they were going to be used in the film.
ReplyFebruary 15, 2021 at 7:37 am #1204042890I think it’s obvious that Mulligan is winning everyone is talking about her performance and unlike Frances and Viola she hasn’t won recently.
I think that’s mostly in the forums and social media where PYW is simply being more hyped up by GD users and film twitter than the other films.
February 12, 2021 at 3:31 pm #1204039565I wouldn’t mind a reboot with more actual Asians cast and more songs that were cut from the original show put back in. The last Broadway revival with Ken Watanabe and Kelli O’Hara was absolutely gorgeous.

February 12, 2021 at 7:59 am #1204038872DiCaprio is kind of like Audrey Hepburn in that both got to work with some of the best directors of their day.
ReplyFebruary 12, 2021 at 7:55 am #1204038862To me, the casting of Glinda is the one that really needs to be right. She actually has the most challenging balancing act both in characterization and in singing. Chenoweth nailing it was why she by far had the best, most glowing reviews out of the original production.
ReplyFebruary 12, 2021 at 7:53 am #1204038857I voted for Close, but I think we’re all lucky to have both with Meryl and a slew of their peers continuing to have careers and doing interesting roles.
ReplyFebruary 12, 2021 at 7:35 am #1204038846I’ve been seeing Kate Winslet everywhere lately campaigning for Ammonite. I wonder if someone is telling her that her chance for a nomination is not as dead as most of us here think. This is the most I’ve seen her campaign in forever. I guess that 5th slot really is up for grabs.
I personally don’t see it happening, but if it does, I have to admire how she willed it to happen after most people declared her DOA.
February 11, 2021 at 7:05 pm #1204038242of course Zhao gonna make it on the top 5 list… for sure… Zhao is the woman in film this award season
What a horrific take.
ReplyFebruary 11, 2021 at 12:07 pm #1204037728I personally think Day, Adams, and Zendaya have equal chances of getting in. Actually, I think Adams is lower because her SAG nomination just seems random and she hasn’t gain much hype or traction from it. Day is making the rounds and speaking eloquently. Zendaya I only have alive because of that CC nomination and the fact she’s being included in pre-Oscar press for some reason.
My personal predictions have none of the three making Best Actress, but I wouldn’t be shocked if any of the three did get in. Well, I will be a bit shocked if Zendaya gets in considering the film itself. It’s not like HE where you know there will be some tasteless, regressive folk in the Academy who bought into the idea that it was ill-served by evil liberal Hollywood.
February 10, 2021 at 10:27 am #1204035525This is serving racism. Idk ur Ethnicity but this is some weird black people joke at the sake of trying to be funny. Its disgusting.
Take it up with gold derby and the experts.
I think Bassett is parodying another poster who kept going on and on about how Viola Davis fans don’t want Andra Day nominated because Day will “split the black vote” and cost Davis the win.
February 10, 2021 at 10:17 am #1204035497This has no chance of winning anything, but I don’t care. Driveways for anything, especially Hong Chau:

Also, Kajillionaire and Shirley for residual love from Madeline’s Madeline.
ReplyFebruary 10, 2021 at 8:38 am #1204035246I’ll only switch to Day if she shockingly wins GG or something.
February 10, 2021 at 8:16 am #1204035206There’s still a chance The US vs BH has a visibility problem. Of course missing the BAFTA, AACTA and crafts shortlists isn’t good, but as mentioned before here, actors are the ones who’ll decide. The Globe+CC combo scored nominations in the past, so I still think Day is still a possibility.
From what I heard from people who watched it, the visibility problem is probably what is helping her get nominated. Right now, she’s a lot of hype and people believing she’s Billie Holiday. The small sample of people who I know who have watched the film are ok with leaving her out.
