Something had to be done because those chart runs are beyond pathetic. All of these songs should be top 10 or at least top 20💀July 13, 2020 at 7:33 pm #1203584753
Good. The chart manipulation was getting out of hand. Trollz was the final straw, literally the worst #1 everJuly 12, 2020 at 10:02 am #1203582525
Love Queen Latifah but she was totally miscastJuly 11, 2020 at 1:05 am #1203580898
Good question. They were all terrific
Nelson and Gossett Jr were the most consistent and were captivating throughout the whole series but Adepo had the best single episode with This Extraordinary BeingJuly 9, 2020 at 10:29 pm #1203579376
I wonder if Blackstar would have won if nominated. Obviously they have a huge hard-on for Adele and 25 will probably be the last Diamond album ever which explains its sweep, but then again this was fucking David Bowie. All the “real music” fans bow down to him
And I may be overstating her “impact” here but I think snubbing Blackstar also avoided the narrative of Beyoncé losing to yet another white male rock artist. But the backlash happened regardless so idk
Losing to Adele, a woman who went Diamond, is friend with her and dedicated her win to her was ultimately easier to swallow for the Beyoncé crowd anywayJuly 9, 2020 at 9:41 pm #1203579329
Cranes In The Sky beating Needed Me was kind of a shock though. I expected them to lazily choose the bigger hit and make sure Rih didn’t go home empty handed that night. I’m glad they went with the superior song and that Solange is a Grammy winner
Anti was a very good album, easily her best but the competition was too strong that night
And yeah, LOUD was probably dead last. It only got in because the era was big and flashy but I don’t think it had that much supportJuly 9, 2020 at 8:52 pm #1203579294
Pharrell is a respected producer. I’m sure that Beyoncé was last place in votes for AOTY that cycle.
Nope. She was 4th, maybe 3rd by some magical stretch. Ed was last, there was absolutely no narrative for him that year and he’s the only one who went home empty handed
I also suspect that the votes may have been very close that yearJuly 9, 2020 at 3:29 pm #1203578817
2015 was a MESS. I mean 4 awards for Sam Smith? Really? Plus BEYONCÉ not winning AOTY and not even Urban Contemporary album was a complete joke. Who the fuck voted for Pharrel instead of her in Urban Contemporary?
As much as I hate Pharrell’s win, I can understand why it happened. People tend to forget that he’s one of the most respected producers in the industry and one of the biggest hitmakers of all-time. Beyoncé herself would have voted for him without hesitation if she wasn’t in the running
Also he was in the middle of a huge comeback. Blurred Lines, Get Lucky, Happy + his clout in the industry… it kinda makes sense now (but he didn’t deserve and BEYONCÉ outsold and out-acclaimed)
I’m pretty sure he’s the reason Ariana even won a Grammy in the first placeJuly 9, 2020 at 3:25 pm #1203578807
Another terrible edition was 2015. Even the nominees were weak in almost every category. I still wonder how Stay with Me didn’t win BPSP and took ROTY and SOTY – those 4 Grammys for Sam Smith with that mid album, really? Their campaign was entirely based on Adele comparisons, even the Oscars worked that way. And let’s not forget Beyoncé. A mess totally.
Agreed. Stay With Me and ITLH were trash but the typical grammy bait sappy bullshit the Grammys love to reward. Sam Smith for BNA was an ok choice given the weak competition but the actual music was so…bland
The way they rode Adele’s hype all the way to a near sweep. Yikes 💀July 9, 2020 at 3:21 pm #1203578795
DGA, WGA, Peabody winner Watchmen leading the noms. Love to see itJuly 9, 2020 at 3:11 pm #1203578771
2016 was easily the worst year. 2014 could have been great but the Macklemore fiasco ruined everything
I’d say 2012 was the best overall even if all the shine went to only one artistJuly 8, 2020 at 2:18 pm #1203574462
If Beyoncé ever has a shot at AOTY again you know she’ll be sitting there front row.
But she won’t, so she’s done with them as I said
I’m pretty sure that she’ll be more focused on winning an Emmy or something rather than AOTY. Sis is probably tired at this pointJuly 8, 2020 at 2:17 pm #1203574451
Are they though? All of them submitted their last albums for consideration.
So did Eminem. That doesn’t mean anything since it’s up to their label, not them. Taylor also submitted her last two albums but didn’t attend either
I can only think of Frank Ocean who didn’t submit and that’s because he’s independent
