Any word on Passing? It’s apparently finished shooting (obstensibly before corona) and is based on good source material. Based on the book Ruth Negga’s role in particularly juucy.
May 5, 2020 at 10:00 am #12034647491. Cate Blanchett
2. Olivia Colman
3. Meryl Streep (didn’t enjoy this performance and thought she should have lost to Viola, but it’s technically well done)
4. Renee Zellweger
5. Natalie Portman (think this performance is somewhat overrated. She just spends 80% of the movie being timid and uncertain)
6. Jennifer Lawrence
7. Brie Larson
8. Frances McDormand/Emma Stone (neither are bad…Frances is just one note, and Emma’s is kind of cutesy and forgettable)
Didn’t see Still Alice
ReplyApril 28, 2020 at 4:21 pm #1203452361Why are people against this idea? It would crowd too many people out, or do you believe there is an actual difference between a female and male acting performance?
ReplyApril 28, 2020 at 4:18 pm #12034523591. Get Out
2. Parasite
3. Birdman
4. Her (it was a boring movie, but at least creative)
5. Django
6. Midnight in Paris
7. Manchester by the Sea
8.Spotlight/The King’s Speech (not bad scripts, just didn’t leave much of an impact)
Didn’t see Civil Right Buddy Comedy
April 28, 2020 at 4:07 pm #12034523421. Viola Davis (snot and all)
2. Regina King
3. Melissa Leo (I know it’s disliked, especially because of the desperation of her campaign, but it was one of the few on here that seemed authentic to me)4. Lupita Nyong’o (Although not as impressed with this performance as I wanted to be. In some scenes you could see the gears ticking)
5. Anne Hathaway
6. Alicia Vikander
7. Patricia Arquette
8. Octavia Spencer/ Allison Janey
………..
……….
10. Laura Dern
April 28, 2020 at 3:51 pm #12034523111. JK Simmons (pretty one note tho)
2. Jared Leto
3. Christoph Waltz
4. Christian Bale
5. Mahershala Ali, Moonlight
6. Sam Rockwell (really just, not amused by the character)
7. Brad Pitt
Didn’t see Green Book or Bridge of Spies, and fell asleep in Beginners.

ReplyApril 25, 2020 at 12:52 pm #1203447499If there are 2 great performances in a film how terrible can it be?
ReplyApril 25, 2020 at 11:42 am #1203447395Don’t know if this is unpopular, but Jude Law’s nomination for The Talented Mr.Ripley is head-scratching. He looks hot but that’s about it. Matt Damon is much more compelling.
(It’s also not a great adaptation of the book.)

April 24, 2020 at 8:58 am #1203445373Will second Janelle over Octavia in Hidden Figures. Octavia was fine, but nothing nomination worthy, whereas I think Janelle and Taraji (different category I know) gave strong performances.
April 16, 2020 at 6:09 am #1203429820For as much as this forum complains about “nothing” or subtle performances, I’m surprised Tilda Swinton’s win doesn’t get more hate. I watched Michael Clayton after she won the Oscar and spent the whole movie waiting for her to have a “scene” that would make me think “Ahh ok that’s why she won.” That scene never came! Is it at the end when Michael Clayton surprises her? What about this performance is so uniquely deserving of acclaim?
Saoirse should have won.
ReplyApril 10, 2020 at 7:43 pm #1203420145^100% agree with Janelle Monae in Hidden Figures. That scene in the courtroom especially gave me goosebumps 😀 No knock to Octavia but I think she was the wrong supporting performance nominated from that film.
ReplyApril 10, 2020 at 7:38 am #1203419141I love the performance although it seems like that’s not consensus here! She’s the most interesting of each scene she’s in. Like the dinner scene in the beginning or scene where she storms out of the diner. I agree her performance loses steam towards the end but I think that has more to do with the writing and the editing (which is always kind of lacking in David O’Russel movies). Was it objectively the best performance of that year? No. But I don’t think it’s bottom-tier either.
ReplyDecember 7, 2019 at 4:38 am #1203221034Saw Marriage Story. I’ll add to the chorus of voices calling Dern’s performance underwhelming based on the hype. It’s a very competent performance, and the courtroom scene where she’s arguing with Ray Liotta was fun to watch…but it was just Laura Dern playing Laura Dern. It’s a more chilled out version of her character on Big Little Lies.
Comparing it to the other “fruntrunners” and considering just the performance (and not the narratives around each person), I wouldn’t necessarily rank her performance above Shuzhen or even JLo honestly. At the very least both of them had moments which actually made me feel something at some point. Dern’s character didn’t.
