I don’t know. Colman isn’t that much into externally transformative acting in the way Streep is. For example, I can imagine Streep actually doing an Italian accent if she played Leda in the film, and that kind of acting is relatively easy to measure objectively, when compared to the more subjective elements of acting, and so it’s easier to…[Read more]

Between this, The Laundromat and The Prom, who would have thought Netflix would have manifested Streep’s flop era?
I think maybe the film might’ve been better received stateside if it came out during Trunp’s presidency, if just for how cathartic it may have been. For all its faults, the Biden administration have made some efforts towards…[Read more]

On the other hand, getting a pay check of this amount for one film gives her the financial stability necessary to pursue less profitable independent films. A lot of actors take cash jobs to fund the small movies they’re more interested in.

Jennifer Lawrence took time off in 2018-19 from acting in order to raise awareness about financial corruption in politics, and is a board member of RepresentUs, an organisation focused on that same area. Since DLU explores the corrosive link between money and policy making (even if it doesn’t always do it well), I can imagine she felt genuinely…[Read more]

I think a lot of non Brits here are overestimating how much sway Prince William has over BAFTA creatively. He’s more akin to a royal patron, and while he may have some input on matters of governance, his role is mainly a PR thing, and any influence he has on what is awarded would be minimal. Stewart and her film could flop at BAFTA (or do very…[Read more]

Didn’t Blanchett bail on the project due to Sorkin’s involvement? I think while she could’ve done an excellent job, she could only be competitive for a win if the film was absolutely amazing. You don’t win a third Oscar for a middling movie unless you’re Meryl Streep and Blanchett wasn’t seen as overdue for 30 years of amazing work.

Mass seems like a non event at this point so that explains Plimpton.
Regarding Buckley, her doing Cabaret in London means she’s not really free to go on the campaign trail and that definitely impedes your chances. Moreover, whilst I haven’t seen the film, the amount and types of raves Colman is getting indicates that her performance really…[Read more]

What could possibly help Zegler, and West Side Story as a whole, is the inherent narrative that comes with Sondheim’s legacy, made even more potent in the last few days. This is a reach but given that the industry already seems to be embracing Zegler this may push her over into a nomination?

For any Irish members, there is a strong chance that Balfe, Buckley and Negga all get nominations in this category. It would probably be the first time a country that wasn’t the USA or the UK occupied 60% of the nominations for a category.

Do we think that Buckley playing Sally Bowles on the West End for the next few months (I think until March?) will help or hinder her nomination chances? It’s an iconic role but being tied to London and performing all those shows might mean she’s not going to campaign that heavily for The Lost Daughter?
She may not get an Oscar nomination but…[Read more]

I think an advantage Buckley has is that she’s probably got the more prestigious resumé as a thespian. There is probably a greater desire to reward her with a nomination than exists with Johnson, and Iris demonstrates that two actors can be nominated for playing the same character in the same movie.

Besides, the optics of Comer being put in supporting when the plot concerns the violation of her character’s body and reputation will be problematic. When it comes to the movie’s themes, she has to be put in lead.

Given Corrin not winning for one of the most buzzed about breakthroughs or Rodriguez not having a historical win (which people are likely to get even more upset about considering how white the overall acting Emmy winners were), or even the notion of Moss being a more deserving winner that some will feel, is it possible that Colman’s Emmy win…[Read more]

Apparently Stone herself wasn’t into campaigning in back to back wins and was happy to not push the film especially after its box office was poor and the year turned out to be really competitive for best actress.

Regarding Chastain, I think her potential nomination will be tied to the reception of Scenes from a Marriage. If that isn’t acclaimed even an Oscar nomination will be dead in the water.

Lady MacBeth is a supporting role. An important one but the narrative ultimately belongs to MacBeth. Lady MacBeth tends to be elevated as a leading role because of how iconic it is and how transgressive it was when it came to its portrayal of a wife in Jacobean Britain.

Given how people view category fraud nowadays, losing in lead might be better in the long run than winning in supporting for a leading role.

Given that she’s directing Passing, I can see Hall herself not wanting to push herself in The Night House so that Thompson has a greater shot in this category.
