I agree Marco. The romance ends and Elio’s heart is broken.
The key difference between the film and the book, as has been said ad nauseum lately, is that the book explores the characters beyond the 1980s. It’s not about the immediate heartbreak, it’s about how the relationship affected their lives long afterwards. I think a further examination of these characters is therefore possible, but by what Guadagnino is describing, he would necessarily have to diverge from the book to get the story he’s implying.

Well the trailer has her with Amanda who is in the “present” storyline.
The only possible explanation is that Cher is actually 97 years old.
