I’m a little surprised with Ledisi being nominated for the solo version of “Anything for You” and not the duet with PJ Morton and that being said, I think this is the time to finally give her a Grammy. Speaking of PJ Morton, he is only nominated in Gospel. He has been a favorite in the R&B field over the past few years, what happened to him this year? With Progressive R&B Album, it is between Jhene Aiko and Chloe x Halle and with Aiko’s surprise AOTY nomination (to me at least) she has the edge. Could she pull an upset in R&B Performance with her song with John Legend? Speaking of John Legend, I think he wins R&B Album since he is the most known name there. Also, what is with the all male lineup when women have had a great year in the genre? Now with R&B Song, H.E.R. will cancel herself out with “Slow Down” and “Better Than I can Imagine”. Beyonce is the frontrunner, also could Chloe x Halle pull off a win here? So many questions. What do you guys think?
I don’t know why you’re surprised. Ledisi has always earned solo nods and she’s never needed the help. The Grammys love her and her music enough to nominate her. Let’s hope they love her enough to reward her with a trophy.
The Grammys realized PJ is overrated and got tired of him, as they should.
Chloe x Halle are Beyonce’s proteges. They’re winning Progressive R&B.
Despite John being the biggest name in R&B Album, the real winner there is Giveon. Gregory Porter’s ‘All Rise’ is a jazz album, so I’m not even sure why he’s there. Luke James could prevail, but it’s not his time yet. I’ve never heard of the other nominee. And yes, it’s tragic that Brandy and Teyana Taylor weren’t nominated here.
Beyonce is the front runner, but if the Grammys have a shred of credibility, they’ll reward Tiana Major9 and EARTHGANG.

I’ve said this before, but it bares repeating. The Grammys should reinstate the Urban/Alternative Performance category and rename it “Alternative R&B Performance.” They should also rename Progressive R&B Album as “Alternative R&B Album.” The field should look like this going forward:
Best R&B Performance
Traditional R&B Performance
Alternative R&B Performance
Alternative R&B Album

Yep, I was referring to R&B Album. I also don’t think men deserved 3/5 spots in Progressive R&B but that’s petty to argue over.
That’s not petty to argue at all. It was a phenomenal year for women in R&B and the Grammys shat on them.

With his surprise nomination for AOTY, do you think that Jacob Collier could pull an upset in R&B Performance? What do you guys think?
It wouldn’t be an upset though, since he’s the most deserving nominee (and my frontrunner) in the category.

predicting a surprise upset in traditional r&b performance with yebba winning for distance…. she’s a future grammy darling in the making.
Against THIRTEEN time Grammy nominee Ledisi in an incredibly weak year? I doubt it. Yebba’s already won. Ledisi paid her dues long ago. It’s her time.

Why people were saying that Ledisi submitted the PJ Morton duet when she’s nominated for the solo version? It makes sense that she would submit the solo version which was the official single played by R&B radio. I hope she wins but I feel Chloe & Halle will take this
Those were people who just wanted to argue. They were in denial. Ledisi doesn’t need help earning Grammy nods on her own. She’s done it 13 times. PJ is hella overrated and he isn’t the Grammy darling everyone seems to think he is. Hell, half of his nods came from either writing an R&B song or being a member of Maroon 5.

I feel most confident in Ledisi finally winning. It would be unfair if she did not. Though if an upset could happen, maybe Yebba could be the one to do it? She did win this category before in a tie for the duet she did with PJ Morton.
I agree. If Ledisi loses, I really hope it’s to Yebba or (and this is far-fetched) Mykal.

1. Anything For You 2. Wonder What She Thinks of Me 3. Distance 4. Let Me Go 5. Sit On Down
I’d switch 2 and 3 since Yebba is a previous winner in the category and the single has received lots of fanfare and attention on Urban AC radio.

I think they made it easy for Chloe and Halle to win. The fact that they were nominated is atrocious.
They better not, and it is.
Deborah Cox was snubbed, yet again.
“Easy Way” and “Come Right Away” would’ve been R&B Performance contenders, not Traditional R&B. Besides, Deborah said on Unsung she quit recording R&B long ago because dance music made her the most money and kept her relevant. Her album, Work of Art, was announced in 2015 and almost six years later, we can only assume it was shelved. Her last successful R&B album was in 2002 and her last R&B album was in 2008. It’s been so long, I doubt people care to hear her voice again, though I would certainly welcome her return if and when she records an R&B album.

The R&B, Gospel, and Musical Theater fields are largely a mess this year.

I noticed that I didn’t really see PJ Morton nominated here unless he is credited with the “Anything for You” nomination with Ledisi.
PJ was only nominated for Gospel Album. I told everyone in the R&B forum he wasn’t getting nominated for the duet. It wasn’t well received and Ledisi certainly didn’t need the help like y’all thought. I knew she could, should, and would get the solo nod. I’m boasting because I feel vindicated.

R&B Performance & Song – Beyoncé, “Black Parade” Progressive R&B – Jhene Aiko, Chilombo R&B Album – John Legend, Bigger Love Traditional R&B – Ledisi, “Anything For You” Can we discuss why R&B Album is always so male dominated?
I see great minds think alike! And yes, to quote Kamala Harris, I think we should have that conversation. Let’s start with Brandy and Teyana Taylor. They were robbed, plain and simple.
