Keira Knightley is a fantastic actress and deserves a comeback.

I think her most Oscar worthy performance was in Atonement. That was an absolutely phenomenal film that should have won more (and James McAvoy should have been nominated).

February 11, 2023 at 9:10 pm #1205300679Finally got around to watching The Fablemans this morning (I was overseas for most of January, so I’ve only been able to see it now). I have to say that I genuinely don’t understand why Judd Hirsch was nominated. Never mind that he was barely in the movie, he massively overacted the part to the point that it felt pantomimish. Tonally he felt really off compared to the rest of the actors in the movie. Paul Dano would have made a far better nominee, and deserved it far more for his subtle acting.

December 22, 2022 at 11:51 pm #1205207019Critics and industry have ignored her so far, hoping that BAFTA jury remembers one of the best performances of the year
I’m sorry, I don’t recognise this. What film is it from?

December 17, 2022 at 10:10 pm #1205199474Terms of Endearment is held up by many to be one of the best melodramas, deserving of all the Oscar praise etc etc. But I just absolutely hated it. I found the characters incredibly unlikeable, especially Shirley MacLaine and Debra Winger’s characters, it was overacted, it lacked any sort of coherent plot, and the cancer diagnosis at the end seemed to come out of nowhere just because the writers didn’t know how to end the movie.
Also, 2001: A Space Odyssey I found really boring. It’s about an hour too long, lacks any real story, the story that is there is inscrutable, the only interesting character is HAL, but I will say that the cinematography is spectacular.

April 22, 2022 at 6:09 am #1204927068I’ll list mine alphabetically:
Naomi Ackie
Cate Blanchett
Carey Mulligan
Margot Robbie
Michelle Yeoh
As much as I love her, I think Olivia Colman misses this year. And I’m not hugely convinced by The Woman King (yet), but if reviews are good, then I’ll replace Cate Blanchett with Viola Davis. I’m very much hoping that this will be Michelle Yeoh’s year though – what she did in Everything, Everywhere was just absolutely incredible, and fully deserving of an Oscar.

March 23, 2022 at 1:24 am #1204870491Lucille Ball is an internationally loved icon too.?
I can only speak for the UK (where I was born and lived for the first 27 years in my life), and Australia (where I’ve lived since 2009), but Lucille Ball is almost unknown in those countries, at least amongst my friends. I have never seen an episode of I Love Lucy. It’s just never been on TV. So I don’t think Lucille Ball is an internationally loved icon.

March 2, 2022 at 12:21 am #1204827357A survey from you all? If you were a voter, who would you vote for? A performance which you liked the most but has little chance of winning OR a performance that is your second favourite but is in a two way race for the win?
I’d vote for my favourite. If they’re my favourite, there’s a good chance they’re other people’s favourite too. That could lead to them winning.

February 19, 2022 at 4:58 pm #1204810079I watched Drive My Car two days ago, and I was completely blown away by it. It was so quiet and understated, yet it felt like there was always something happening, and it felt incredibly violent in some ways (I don’t know if that makes sense?). It was so beautifully acted, and I really wish Hidetoshi Nishijima was in the running for Best Actor. His work was so understated and subtle, yet so expressive. I loved it all!

February 7, 2022 at 5:58 pm #1204783742I loved Clue as a young child. I memorised the three different endings and could recite the script perfectly. I still think it stands up as an excellent comedy.

January 9, 2022 at 12:59 am #1204706860I should add that my personal experience as detailed above probably cliffs my judgment a bit, and I’m probably not as objective as everyone else on this board with regards to this performance.
