But the Apple deal is not a full acquisition. Just like with On the rocks, A24 will handle Macbeth’s theatrical release. Apple simply purchased streaming rights. It makes the film stronger with two studios supporting its campaign imo.May 10, 2021 at 6:31 am #1204249045
Del Toro and Cooper already campaigning lol They are doing a Storytellers talk at Tribeca next monthMay 1, 2021 at 4:31 am #1204237954
Good riddance tbh. If you don’t trust your voting body, educate them or mold them to be good (axe label executives, managers, etc that basically use Grammys as a PR machine and put the focus on the people that actually do the music). Why would anybody be interested in taking part of any of this if then a third part is going to “correct” your opinion?April 29, 2021 at 7:56 am #1204234752
I don´t think Ali´s chances are really dead. Yeah, he will probably need some time but I totally see him as someone that could pull a lead win with a baity transformative role or even in a project with a big director.April 28, 2021 at 2:08 pm #1204233899
The Woman King is coming stronger. Thuso Mbedu (The Underground Railroad) has been cast as the daughter (it was Lupita’s role when it was announced years ago)April 28, 2021 at 1:57 pm #1204233866
I don’t think Parallel Mothers will be released this year. The last time Almodovar did a Q4 release was 20 years ago and they are still filming. I think it will follow a similar rollout to his past projects: March release in Spain and festival rollout after that.April 28, 2021 at 1:04 am #1204232876
Surprise to see Little America getting in but it deserves it so much. It was severely overlooked this year.April 26, 2021 at 12:05 pm #1204229722
I think on top of everything that’s been said, Hollywood has that wrong notion that movies with black leading roles do not bring money and when they do it’s because they cater just to a black audience.
Also, I don’t know if projects like that all-black cast remake of Terms of endearment that Lee Daniels wants to do or that all-black cast remake of Cat on a hot tin roof Fuqua announced this week is really the way to go. They could work but they could also be a reductive mess.April 26, 2021 at 8:05 am #1204228836
Does Warner Bros has a clear contender for now ? Because if Dune flops, which is pretty much possible, will Cry Macho end up being a contender ? We know Warner Bros always has a BP nominee, and I can see them pulling an “oldest winner” narrative for Eastwood, although I believe Cry Macho will be similar to Gran Torino rather than Unforgiven, which isn’t a good thing. The two movies will be released on the same month.
King Richard: baity biopic about the father of Venus and Serena Williams starring Will SmithApril 26, 2021 at 4:19 am #1204228119
Slightly off topic: Frances’ Wikipedia page has been updated to say she’s the only person to win for producing and acting in one night, which is of course a huge achievement. But does anyone happen to know the other people who have won both categories? Google is being unhelpful and I can only think of Brad Pitt and George Clooney.
Michael Douglas did it aswell (One flew over the cuckoo´s nest as producer and Wall Street as actor).April 26, 2021 at 3:22 am #1204227905
The narrative is not going to get anyone the award. The academy doesn’t give a fuck. It’ll be about performance only, which is how it should be, but we all know that the academy has problems rewarding POC lead Oscars, so I am concerned. We shall see.
The way they killed, buried and spat on these reasonings we´ve used this whole year: “there are four POC women nominated, BAFTA won´t dare to award a white actress”, “in the BLM year, they won´t dare to award two white actors on leading roles”, etc lol If they like somebody else, they don´t give a fuck for real. It will be interesting to see if the new diversity guidelines have any effect once the Academy starts to apply them.April 26, 2021 at 3:03 am #1204227856
Happy for H.E.R.
It was not my pick but she gets so much vitriol with the whole “industry plant” comments (ironically from fans of other r&b acts) that I lowkey root for her lolApril 26, 2021 at 2:57 am #1204227830
From that teaser, that looks like another binge-watchable hit for Miss Kidman.
