Do you think Adam Driver can get three Globe nominations?
Comedy/Musical Actor- Annette
Drama Actor- House of Gucci
S. Actor- The Last Duel
I’m not saying it’s going to happen, but do you think there’s a possibility he gets in all three?April 16, 2021 at 12:45 pm #1204204221
I think its nice that we are talking about In the Heights. I personally have it on my Oscar predictions for a number of reasons.
The movie is the Academy’s cup of tea. It’s a crowd pleaser with still a lot of heart and emotions. The show can be very sad but it has a very uplifting ending.
The film will play into the diversity push at the Academy with the entire cast I believe being POC, along with the director and writers.
Speaking of which, Jon M. Chu did already do Crazy Rich Asians and while that didn’t get into the Oscars it still was a major player during awards season. That film did play into the diversity push and it was good. The reason why I believe the film didn’t make it to the Oscars was because of the subject matter not being the Academy’s forte. This film is about immigrants trying to make it in the world of crime, death, poverty, but still a lot of spirit. That might just give it the boost that Crazy Rich Asians was missing
Finally, I think Warner Bros. will push this film, even if it does have a June release date. This isn’t some indie drama. This is a big budget Lin-Manuel Miranda film that I feel will get a lot of attention. I mean besides Dune there’s not many movies I see Warner Bros. pushing for Oscar noms.
Just because it has a June release date doesn’t mean its dead. Sure it hurts but there tends to be at least one film that makes it in from the summer. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Blackkklansman, Dunkirk, Hell or High Water all came out in August or July, and films like Mad Max Fury Road, Grand Budapest Hotel, Black Panther, and Get Out were all even earlier. It’s all about what holds it back and what pushes it forward. I think In the Heights has more pushing it forward.
Now the catergories I think it can get into are: BP, Actor (Ramos), S. Actress (Merediz), Director (Chu), Cinematography, Editing, Song, Production Design, and Sound.
These catergories may not be on my list but are definitely in contention. Ramos and Merediz have great songs, are funny, have crying scenes, and are the heart of the film. Cinematography, PD, and Sound are based on the trailer. Editing seems like it could be seriously something important to the film. Director is definitely the least likely out of all of these but I could still see happening.
If you made it this far, then thanks for reading.April 14, 2021 at 8:01 am #1204200045
On the matter of the two Ridley Scott films and the three Adam Driver films, I have some thoughts. I think the best bet for the Oscars would be The Last Duel. It has three screenwriters on it who are famous for their writing (two of them have won screenplay Oscars, the other has been nominated) and is based on very well respected source material. I’ll be putting it on my lists for BP, Supporting Actor (Driver), Supporting Actress (Comer, as of right now in my mind I think they will go supporting as she’ll have the better chance to win), Director, Cinematography, Adapted Screenplay. I think there’s also a good chance it can get into Costumes, PD, Film Editing, Sound, Score, and I think Damon is definitely at least in talks for Actor but I’m not too sure about him.
House of Gucci I don’t think is as strong of a player, but I think it can still get in there. This could be a year like 2001 where Steven Soderbergh got two Director and Picture nominations and even won Director for Traffic. The only catregories I think Gucci will get into at this moment are: Actress (Gaga), Supporting Actor (Pacino), Costumes. I think it’s stronger in Costumes then TLD. Maybe Makeup and Hair, and maybe Driver in Actor but I have a feeling his role will be more baity in TLD. I do think Annette won’t be an Oscar player, but Driver and Cotillard can sneak in at Globes.
As far as winning is concerned, the only win I can see for either is Comer in Supporting Actress which is the reason I think they’ll put her in that catergory. But who knows the next few years will be interesting at the Oscars.April 14, 2021 at 6:58 am #1204199983
Personally, to play it safe this year, I’m not going to predict anything until it has a release date. It just seems safer and less mind-boggling at this time when everything is so new and confusing. That’s just what I’m doing.
