Honey, Taylor Swift’s tired ass did NOT need a third Album of the Year (or a second; shit, even a first). Since that broad has three, Adele should have three Album of the Year wins too.
If we’re talking coulda woulda shoulda then Kanye West should have at least two AOTY trophies, Kendrick Lamar should have two, Beyonce should have one, etc etc.
June 20, 2022 at 2:00 am #1204990304Honey, there is NOT anything wrong with Drake being all about quantity over quality. Shit, a bitch got to get those coins!
He already GOT the money. He signed a $400 Million dollar re-up with Universal
Putting out two trash albums in a row isn’t going to help him sustain coin of nobody wants to hear the projects. The music is terrible
June 16, 2022 at 8:25 pm #1204987555to suggest that an artist as already successful and rich as beyoncé would spend 6 years trying to make an album with the primary intention of winning a silly trophy is absurd
Exactly. Anyone with even a SHRED of common sense knows this
Also as artists, their SUPPOSED to have the mindset that they are creating the best art they possibly can, which means they are making the best art PERIOD. Beyonce isn’t supposed to be “scared” releasing within the window of Adele or any other artist because she’s supposed to think her own efforts are a match or greater. If the Grammys were a truly fair competition then Beyonce would’ve been had her AOTY trophy. The fact that the Grammys are inherently racist against BLACK artists and the groundbreaking music they create isn’t Beyonce’s problem. Or Kendrick’s. Or even Kanye’s. And to have to have to factor in their release dates to have some sort of strategic “advantage” over their white counterparts is absolutely ridiculous
ReplyJune 16, 2022 at 8:09 pm #1204987513Currently, the locks for rap album are probably Kendrick, Jack & Pusha T. I think Future & Nas would be worthy of the other two slots. Lil Durk is a strong possibility as well. I’d probably count Gunna out now because of the current legal situation. I’m not sure who else is yet to release in rap before the eligibility ends? Drake is of course dropping tonight but based on last year, I don’t see him submitting. Megan Thee Stallion has said that she’ll be dropping her sophomore album this summer, she is a 3x Grammy winner however if they didn’t nominate Good News what are the chances of nominating the next album? Suppose it depends on the album’s content. Lil Baby has an album coming soon, so I guess that could be a contender. I’m not sure if Nicki will actually drop her anticipated fifth album by September – and whether she’ll actually submit – but that’s a possibility. Either way, all of this talk is essentially pointless because Kendrick is definitely taking home Best Rap Album (and more than likely all four rap categories!)
Nas is going to drop again this year, HOPEFULLY before summer ends so the newer album (Kings Disease 3) will probably be his submission.
Asap Rocky we’ll be also be releasing before sunmer’s end according to his social media
Like you said Megan is releasing. As long as her album isn’t a complete dud I think she’s a shoe in for a nom. I actually would put her in over Jack Harlow. Harlow’s album was critically panned and has seemed to (rightfully) have come and gone.
Travis Scott has confirmed an album this year.
so there are a LOT of potentials
ReplyJune 16, 2022 at 7:46 pm #1204987467Do we know why he made that decision this year?
He wrote an open letter in support of The Weeknd skewering The Grammys and saying that they were irrelevant and out of touch. He’d look like a hypocrite having CLB amongst the noms even though there was almost no chance he’d win.
ReplyJune 16, 2022 at 7:40 pm #1204987453There’s rumors that it’s house/dance influenced which is interesting. He probably won’t even submit to the Grammys, considering the fact he withdrew his CLB-related nominations last year. Could’ve been a good line up though with the likes of Kendrick, Drake, Pusha T, Future & Nas all for contention in album. Kendrick will be winning either way though, I cannot see him losing.
There’d have to be leaked footage of Kendrick abusing bunnies & sparrows for him to lose Best Rap Album
June 16, 2022 at 6:54 pm #1204987380Technically not actually relevant until the 2024 Grammys, but I wonder which major releases we’ll get in Q4 this year considering so many major names have dropped already or will be dropping in the summer? There’s always major albums every Q4, last year we had Adele as the major one as well as Silk Sonic, Brandi and critically successful albums from the likes of Summer Walker & Ed Sheeran. We could get Renaissance Act 2 in Q4 as the major release, I’m also kind of expecting Taylor to drop either Speak Now TV or 1989 TV in October/November. Maybe Olivia’s sophomore album around then too? I think a Q4 release could be beneficial for SZA compared to a summer one, although who knows if we will even get an album at all from her. Maybe Cardi in Q4 too? I can’t see it happening, but imagine if we also got Rihanna & Frank this year? It would literally be one of the biggest years for music ever…
Its been awhile since Jay-Z dropped. I wouldn’t put it past him & Beyonce to have it set up where she drops in the Summer and tours and he drops in the Fall and tours and then they link up for an On The Run 3 tour in 2023.
I know you mentioned SZA. With Kendrick having officially left TDE, it would behoove the label to prove that they can “survive” on a mainstream level with their flagship once-in-a-generation artist having bounced. Having a SZA album ready SOMETIME this year would make all the sense in the world to kick off the Kendrick-less era of the imprint.
I also think new Donald Glover AKA Childish Gambino music could be on the horizon. With Atlanta having finished filming seasons 3 & 4 and it looking like he’s winding down with the first season of Mr & Mrs Smith; I could see him potentially having a project ready for the Winter. He’s stated he likes releasing albums in the Winter and his two biggest albums selling albums were both winter releases.
June 16, 2022 at 9:09 am #1204985912I’m so happy it’s not a surprise drop. They were becoming TIRED! I’ve been praying for fun upbeat music and seems that’s exactly what we are getting!
How can you be “tired” of something you didn’t know was happening?
ReplyJune 16, 2022 at 7:58 am #1204985419now with Bey in the race, we have her and Kendrick both w the overdue AOTY narrative VS heavy Grammy darlings Adele & Silk Sonic
Between Beyonce and Kendrick it’ll be Beyonce. The Grammys need ANY excuse not to award a Hip Hop album the highest honor and the optics look MUCH better to give it to Bey than Adele.
But then again watch em say “fuck it” and give it to Adele just watch the world burn for a monthly news cycle.
June 11, 2022 at 9:58 am #1204980126Its true, Beyoncé came very close to winning AOTY with Sasha Fierce. She defeated Taylor Swift in SOTY and female pop performance, as well as sweeping her field. In the year of Lemonade she probably also came in at #2, but Adele must have won by a large margin. Self-titled must have been at #3, behind Sam Smith.
Pharrell was 2nd that year.
How do you guys know who came in 2nd-3rd in AOTY voting?
I’d be VERY interested to know who came in 2nd for a few years. Specifically 2016, 2018, and 2020
June 11, 2022 at 5:13 am #1204979873Beyonce, Kendrick & Adele in the same voting cycle…
Adele is going to win but Beyonce and Kendrick will clean up in their genre categories. Thats the way of the Grammys.
The only real question is if Beyonce can get ROTY if she releases a smash
June 9, 2022 at 4:52 pm #1204978273The “Five songs you DIDN’T perform” rule sounds dumb to me. Writers are WRITERS. PERIOD. And regardless if they perform their own songs or not if the lyrics strike a chord then they deserve to be recognized and honored.
Other than that go nuts. It’ll be another award that rarely if ever goes to black artists either way
ReplyJune 8, 2022 at 11:03 pm #1204976848I pray Kendrick wins AOTY over Adele and Silk Sonic. If there is ANY justice in the world it will be so…
June 6, 2022 at 11:14 am #1204974227Even though I don’t consider myself a fan of Harry Styles, these last few posts about his business practices and the promo surrounding his albums have been VERY illuminating!
Also I cheer for ANY artist who owns their own Masters!
