2017 Comedy Actor Emmy predictions slugfest: Will Jeffrey Tambor fend off Donald Glover?

“This looks like a year where Donald Glover might give Jeffrey Tambor a run for his money,” declares Gold Derby senior editor Rob Licuria to kick off our discussion of the Best Comedy Actor Emmy race during our recent webcam chat (watch above). Joining Licuria to analyze this race in detail are Gold Derby contributing writers Charles BrightRiley Chow, Zach Laws, Tony Ruiz and Amanda Spears. The nominees in this category are:

Anthony Anderson, “Black-ish” – “Lemons”
Aziz Ansari, “Master of None” – “The Dinner Party”
Zach Galifianakis, “Baskets” – “Freaks”
Donald Glover, “Atlanta” – “The Big Bang”
William H. Macy, “Shameless” – “You Sold Me the Laundromat, Remember?”
Jeffrey Tambor, “Transparent” – “Elizah”

“Thank Donald Trump for your win, because that transgender tweet basically sealed your Emmy,” Spears says about Tambor. “It put the show back into front of mind.”

Laws also believes Tambor will go three for three. “I think people assume because ‘Transparent’ didn’t get a comedy series nomination that was a ding against his chances, but I think that was kind of a fluke,” he argues. “If you look at the seven nominations it got, more than ‘Atlanta,’ more than ‘Black-ish,’ more than ‘Modern Family.’ They’re still watching the show. And three of those nominations are for acting. So actors are watching the show.”

Chow isn’t buying that argument, though. “I don’t think the passion is there for ‘Transparent’ anymore. It was dropped from series,” he says. “At SAG they dropped it not only from ensemble, but they also didn’t award Tambor again.”

“I think it is between Tambor and Galifianakis and Glover,” Ruiz argues. “But all for different reasons.” In particular, he reminds us to watch out for Galifianakis because, “He plays twins on ‘Baskets’ … he’s hysterically funny.”
