2017 Comedy Actress Emmy predictions slugfest: Julia Louis-Dreyfus upset?

“It’s pretty obvious that the frontrunner is Julia Louis-Dreyfus,” declares Gold Derby senior editor Rob Licuria to kick off our discussion of the Best Comedy Actress Emmy race. Joining Licuria during our recent webcam slugfest (watch above) to analyze this race in detail are Gold Derby contributing writers Charles BrightRiley Chow, Zach Laws, Tony Ruiz and Amanda Spears. The seven nominees in this category are:

Pamela Adlon, “Better Things” – “Future Fever”
Jane Fonda, “Grace and Frankie” – “The Pot”
Allison Janney, “Mom” – “Tush Push and Some Radishes”
Ellie Kemper, “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” – “Kimmy Goes to College”
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, “Veep” – “Groundbreaking”
Tracee Ellis Ross, “Black-ish” – “Being Bow-Racial”
Lily Tomlin, “Grace and Frankie” – “The Burglary”

“We should be talking about who is most likely to upset, because people might have a little fatigue for her,” Licuria argues. “I think Pamela Adlon could upset. She is a very well respected comedian.”

“It’s Julia. There’s not much else to talk about,” Bright jokes.

“I don’t think you’re that crazy to go with Pamela Adlon,” Laws agrees. “She’s an Emmy winner for ‘King of the Hill,’ and enough people watched that show to nominate her, and I think that if you’re going to take down Julia Louis-Dreyfus, you’ve got to have something new that you bring to the table, and her being in a first season show might be the thing.”

“If Pamela Adlon is in here, then she’s already been seen by a broad enough group that she could have enough number one votes,” Chow agrees.

“If tapes mattered, I would give it to Lily Tomlin this year,” Spears argues. “You get a double dose of her crazy, and it’s really enjoyable.”

On the other hand, Ruiz thinks that Allison Janney “is a real threat here, because we’ve underestimated her before. There’s a really interesting parallel where she won two times in the supporting category for ‘The West Wing,’ then submitted herself in lead [and won].”
