2017 Emmy predictions battle: Can ‘Atlanta’ really take down ‘Veep’ as Best Comedy Series?
In the Emmy race for Best Comedy Series, everyone seems to think that HBO’s “Veep” will three-peat. But is it vulnerable this year thanks to FX’s new comedy “Atlanta”? Gold Derby editors Tom O’Neil, Chris Beachum and Marcus James Dixon debate the major comedy categories in our new 2017 Emmy predictions slugfest.
All three editors believe that “Veep” star Julia Louis-Dreyfus will win her sixth straight Emmy for Best Comedy Actress, which will tie her with Cloris Leachman in terms of eight acting Primetime Emmys. There doesn’t seem to be a consensus choice for who might come in second place to Louis-Dreyfus, though they all admit they’d personally vote for Ellie Kemper (“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”). As for Best Comedy Actor, our editors on split on whether Jeffrey Tambor (“Transparent”) can win his third consecutive trophy, or if he’ll be taken down by Donald Glover (“Atlanta”), William H. Macy (“Shameless”) or Zach Galifianakis (“Baskets”).
