2018 Oscars Best Actor predictions slugfest: Editors track frontrunners

Is the 2018 Oscar race for Best Actor over before it’s even begun? All of Gold Derby’s expert journalists and in-house editors are predicting that Gary Oldman (“Darkest Hour”) will prove victorious for his transcendent role as British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. In our editors’ latest predictions video, Tom O’Neil, Paul Sheehan, Chris Beachum, Daniel Montgomery and Marcus James Dixon debate who could potentially take down Oldman, and the results are mixed. Watch our video slugfest above or listen to the audio podcast below.

“It looks like it’s gonna one of those years where we know who’s gonna win early on,” notes O’Neil. “It looks like Gary Oldman in ‘Darkest Hour’ as Winston Churchill if we refer to the odds at Gold Derby. Paul, what say you?”

“Well, I think you’re absolutely right that it’s Gary Oldman,” Sheehan readily admits. “They’ve probably already started engraving his name on the statue to save time. It very much reminds me of Daniel Day-Lewis in ‘Lincoln,’ ironically probably Oldman’s biggest competitor this year. It just was his to lose.”

Beachum wonders if it might “be a negative” that so many people have won awards for portraying Churchill, including John Lithgow a few months ago at the Emmys for Netflix’s “The Crown.” “Couldn’t people start going, ‘Oh I’m sick of this. Everybody plays Churchill.'”

Does the fact that “Phantom Thread” is Day-Lewis’ final movie give him the edge in the Best Actor contest? Montgomery says, “I’m skeptical about the fact of whether he’s actually retiring. He makes films so infrequently relative to other actors of his stature that he could come back in five years, in 10 years, in 15 years.”

Dixon sizes up some of Oldman’s other competitors by reminding us, “Tom Hanks is looking for number three, Denzel Washington is looking for number three, Daniel Day-Lewis is looking for number four. I think all of that really helps Gary Oldman. Because here you have a guy that’s never won. I realize he has one nomination, but he feels overdue.”

  1. I really feel like you should consider Robert Pattison as a dark horse threat. He got the Gotham nom. He’ll probably get the Indie Spirit nom as well. Maybe even a few critic’s prizes? In a weak field of actors, it’s possible.

  2. Everyone is underestimating Timothee Chalamet. I’m predicting he takes the early critics awards and changes the trajectory of the race.
