Betty Gilpin Interview: ‘GLOW’

“Debbie is always on the verge of screaming naked in the street,” actress Betty Gilpin reveals about her “GLOW” character Debbie Eagan in an interview with Gold Derby (watch the exclusive video above). She continues, “Her life explodes and she has to navigate, ‘How can I be an alpha person with all the answers when I now have no answers and my life is a mess?’ So she’s learning how to live as a complete mess.”

The explosion in question is the affair that Debbie’s husband Mark Eagan (played by Rich Sommer) has with Debbie’s best friend Ruth Wilder (Alison Brie) in the first season of the dramedy, which Netflix released last June. Gilpin teases about the second season coming this June, “Every time I have a scene with Ruth, I always think of Debbie reaching out to her with one hand and holding a shiv or a knife in the other, ready to gut her.”

Debbie and Ruth are fictional members of the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, a real-life wrestling troupe founded in 1985 with televised matches. Gilpin recalls hearing about the Netflix dramatization for the first time, “I didn’t know what G.L.O.W. was and then I Googled it and saw that it was about Barbie women who were having a psych[ot]ic break, throwing each other across a room.”

The “GLOW” cast partakes in a month of training before shooting each season and the sport has “completely changed” Gilpin’s self-confidence. “You just feel like a superhero when you wrestle,” she says, explaining, “Wrestling was the first time that I was able to eliminate the male-gaze representative in my brain and thought about using my body in sports and exercise and wide shots and that’s been carried into my career [and] in other things that I do in my life.”
