Evan Peters Q&A: ‘American Horror Story: Freak Show’

"You know, I wrote a list of all the horrific things that happened to Jimmy and I thought I'd read them off real quick," says Evan Peters at the tail-end of our video chat about the FX limited series "American Horror Story: Freak Show." He goes on to list about two dozen of the most gut-wrenching, emotional things that happened to his character Jimmy Darling, all of which took place over the course of only 13 episodes.

"I have to say that it was an incredibly challenging season, but an incredibly rewarding season that we actually got all of that on film," Peters tells us.

This year, creator Ryan Murphy and FX have decided to campaign Peters in the Emmy race for Best Movie/Mini Actor, as opposed to the Supporting race where he'd previously contended. What does Peters make of his Emmy promotion? "It's very cool. It was definitely a lead role. I mean, there were some insane things happened to him and a great arc for Jimmy, so I was very happy to be given that role."

"The prosthetic hands were hard to keep on," Peters recalls about the biggest challenge of playing Jimmy. "Everything that I touched and used on set as a prop or whatever was constantly destroying the hands, so we would have to be constantly be re-working the hands. And then, not to mention, the actual physical ailment. I contacted Jason Black, who is the Black Scorpion, who actually has ectrodactyly and he was nice enough to lend me some information on a lot of the different things that come along with it. There's a lot of pain involved."

One of the great moments this season was the scene where Peters finally discovers that Michael Chiklis' character is really his father. "That scene was particularly difficult to film. It was very late, and the subject matter is not easy. Anything with parents, to me, is very difficult … And we had a good time filming the stuff in the bar, the drunk stuff, so that was kind of fun. We were joking around a lot filming that."

Also in our chat, Peters talks about the upcoming "Hotel" season, the departure of Jessica Lange, which former actor he would like to see return to the franchise and the status of "X-Men: Apocalypse" where he'll be reprising his role of Quicksilver.
