Golden Globes 2018 slugfest: Editors welcome Joyce Eng by waging war against her loony TV predictions
Now that Joyce Eng has joined our staff as senior editor, it’s time for us to give her a typical Gold Derby welcome — so let’s blast away at her predictions for the 2018 Golden Globes! Watch video above or listen to the audio podcast below as she joins our Gold Derby editorial team dishing the hot TV categories.
The Globes are just days away (this Sunday, January 7 on NBC) and they are notoriously difficult to predict, of course, so everybody’s picks are fair game. Even Joyce’s picks, despite the fact that she often reaps top accuracy scores among our Experts. Here she takes on co-editors Tom O’Neil, Paul Sheehan, Chris Beachum, Daniel Montgomery and Marcus James Dixon.
One of Joyce’s out-of-the-box predictions is Ewan McGregor (“Fargo”) for Best Movie/Mini Actor, which Marcus takes her to task on: “He played two roles on ‘Fargo,’ but I just don’t know if they’re gonna go back to the ‘Fargo’ well this year. I know you have him in first, but what about Robert De Niro? You don’t think he could win this?”
“He’s only won one competitive award ever, and that was just for ‘Raging Bull’ 37 years ago,” Joyce replies. “He could win on his name alone. [But] I have Ewan just because ‘Fargo’ made the series cut … and I’m hoping for a ‘Moulin Rouge!’ reunion between Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman backstage. They gave us a ‘Titanic’ reunion two years ago. They can totally do this.”
As for Best Comedy Actor, Joyce currently has Eric McCormack (“Will & Grace”) as her top choice, but admits, “I kinda want to switch to Kevin Bacon. He’s the biggest name [and] that category is wide open.”
While Paul adds that he’s predicting Bacon, Chris declares, “I’ve got Aziz Ansari right now. Wasn’t eligible last year, was also up the year before. He’s not foreign, but his parents are, and that is intriguing to me.”
