Editors debate: What to think of Golden Globe TV nominations?
The 2018 Golden Globes TV nominations have been announced, which means it’s time for another round of applauding, hissing and head-scratching from our editors. In our latest predictions video, Tom O’Neil, Paul Sheehan, Chris Beachum, Daniel Montgomery and Marcus James Dixon debate all the major surprises like Freddie Highmore for “The Good Doctor,” and snubs like Julia Louis-Dreyfus for “Veep.” Watch our video slugfest above or listen to the audio podcast below.
“They’re usually, let’s be honest, always a bit eccentric,” declares O’Neil. “They love to embrace new shows, like in this case ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ and ‘SMILF’ on the comedy side. [That’s] usually to the detriment of some veteran shows that you might think would get an automatic nomination, but that’s not what Julia Louis-Dreyfus and the ‘Veep’ producers are thinking this morning.”
Beachum agrees, reminding everyone, “When a show gets to a certain age, they just abandon them generally. They’ve never liked that show, they’ve never given it one award, comedy series or Julia. I would say the two I’m most excited about today are Freddie Highmore and Kyle MacLachlan [‘Twin Peaks’].”
Dixon chimes in, “The big story is ‘Big Little Lies’ gets six nominations, that’s more than any other show. The closest competitor is ‘Feud’ with four. ‘Big Little Lies’ way over-performed. We only thought it would get five, but it got an extra one for Shailene Woodley.”
Montgomery hypothesizes about which shows and stars we might see pair up at the Golden Globes ceremony on January 7. “Now that Julia Louis-Dreyfus isn’t in the running, I really think that you’re gonna have that pairing with ‘Mrs. Maisel’ and comedy actress Rachel Brosnahan.”
“What about ‘Will & Grace’?” Sheehan wonders aloud. “It’s got that dubious distinction of losing all those races. I know that only Eric McCormack got nominated, but he did get nominated and the show got nominated in comedy series. Could you see that happening that he breaks the curse?”
