Jemima Kirke Q&A: ‘Girls’

“When they first said action, I was so unsure of what I was doing,” admits Jemima Kirke of her first day working on “Girls” six years ago playing Jessa Johansson. In our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video above), she adds, “I was sort of free falling that day. I didn’t have a grasp of the magnitude of the thing I was involved in.”

Jumping to her last day on the series this season, Kirke was overwhelmed for different reasons. She reveals, “I was a bit overwhelmed because I’m terrible with salutations and goodbyes. I get very awkward and I’m like ‘Shit, now they are going to make an announcement and the whole thing.’ I wanted to just get to my dressing room. I’m just not good at that stuff. I like to slip away. But they wouldn’t let me. There had to be a big sendoff and it was nice.”

Her last scene was the penultimate episode of the series and featured Kirke’s character Jessa at a party with the other girls (Lena Dunham, Zosia Mamet, Allison Williams). She says, “It was a montage of Lena looking at all the girls. Staring at us with love. I’m just sitting there eating cupcakes. It was just a glimpse of me, but a lot of effort went in. I had to eat so many cupcakes. They said ‘Jessa needs friends. That will be her swan song in the show, we are going to make sure Jessa has nice friend support.'”

Kirke reveals that in shooting that scene, “I knew there was going to be no audio so we started saying whatever. Which is always really fun to do. I was saying ‘you should be my friend cause I will totally steal your boyfriend’ and ‘are you gay? Because I don’t really know how to have female friends without sleeping with them.’ Then they took the audio off, put all the heartwarming music over it and that’s what you get.”

The final two seasons of the show saw Jessa go out with Adam (Adam Driver), the ex-boyfriend of Hannah (Dunham). On that decision for her character, Kirke says it “ended up being important for her because of all her decisions it did the most damage, but she can’t regret that one because it was her first real romantic relationship.”
