Jennifer Lopez Interview: ‘World of Dance’
“I started out as a producer on this show; I was never meant to be a judge,” reveals Jennifer Lopez about her red-hot reality TV show “World of Dance,” which returns for Season 2 on May 29. “We were trying to find the perfect panel, ’cause coming from ‘American Idol‘ I knew how important that was. We started producing the show and putting it together, and then almost like a month or two before we started, [NBC] was like, ‘You know who’s the perfect person for this?!'” Watch our exclusive video interview with Lopez above.
“I wasn’t sure it was the right time” to return to a judging panel, Lopez readily admits about appearing on camera in addition to her duties as a producer. “I didn’t want to go back into judging so quickly. I had my series [‘Shades of Blue’] and I had some movies that were coming up. I had my Vegas residency, so there was a lot going on. But it’s my show, and I want it to be the best it can be. I felt like, you know what? I have to do it.”
Lopez’s star power could be key to helping “World of Dance” enter the Emmy derby this year. The show’s first season will contend as Reality-Competition Program at the 2018 Emmys where it’ll face off against such reality TV titans as four-time winner “The Voice” and 10-time champ “The Amazing Race.” Lopez is a former Golden Globe nominee for “Selena” (1997), but if she’s nominated as a producer for “World of Dance” Season 1 it would be her first career bid at the Emmys.
Lopez says she’s “super proud” of her “World of Dance” team both behind the scenes and in front of the camera. Her fellow judges Ne-Yo and Derek Hough are back for Season 2, as is host Jenna Dewan Tatum and producers Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas and Benny Medina. “I think we have one of the best crews that I’ve worked with. Everybody loves the show so much. I think that’s key, that people are really enjoying the work. Sometimes the planets align and something kind of comes together in the perfect way.”
Also in our interview, Lopez teases what fans can expect on “World of Dance” Season 2, she discusses the big difference between judging a singing show vs. a dancing show, and she reveals who her dream guest judges would be.
