Oscar nominations slugfest 2019: Editors’ stunned reactions to snubs and shockers
“After the PGA Awards I was 100% convinced, okay, it’s a ‘Green Book’ type of year … but then it didn’t get director. It’s like, now what?” Gold Derby editor Marcus James Dixon wonders aloud in our video slugfest about the 2019 Oscar nominations. “Green Book” missing Best Director for Peter Farrelly is just one of the head-scratching snubs that our team debate in our latest predictions smackdown. Beachum reminds us, “Everybody that’s really a front-runner for Best Picture missed something. ‘Roma’ missed editing, ‘A Star Is Born’ misses directing and editing, ‘Green Book’ misses director. Why is Best Picture so hard the past four or five years in a row? My biggest takeaway is that there’s no consensus at all for Best Picture as best we can tell at the moment.”
Wloszczyna cites the leading 10 nominations for “The Favourite” and “Roma” as being tell-tale signs that the academy loves them, though she adds, “I still think ‘Green Book’ despite not having director has a chance, too. With the longer category for Best Picture, things are gonna split up anyway.”
Eng agrees with Dixon that Justin Hurwitz‘s snub for Best Score for “First Man” was “one of my biggest shockers.” She adds, “I thought it was between him and ‘If Beale Street Could Talk’ for the win, and I’m like, now ‘Beale Street’ has to win because that’s just one of the best scores of the year.”
“I was looking for ‘Eighth Grade’ to get that lone screenplay nomination,” laments Montgomery. “They went with A24, but they went with ‘First Reformed’ instead, which honestly I can’t complain too much about that nomination, I just wish ‘Eighth Grade’ had gotten in there.”
