Per Saari Q&A: ‘Big Little Lies’ producer
“I think we were all blown away,” admits “Big Little Lies” producer Per Saari during our recent webcam chat (watch the exclusive video interview above) when asked about the 16 Emmy nominations the show received, including Best Limited Series. Based on the novel by Laura Moriarty, this HBO production centers on three mothers (Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, and Shailene Woodley) whose lives unravel to the point of murder. Both Witherspoon and Kidman compete as Best Movie/Mini Actress, while Woodley contends alongside Laura Dern in supporting. The show also reaped bids for supporting actor Alexander Skarsgård, director Jean-Marc Vallée, and writer David E. Kelley.
Saari and Kidman have been producing partners for nearly a decade, collaborating on the films “Rabbit Hole” (2010), “Monte Carlo” (2011), and “The Family Fang” (2015). The two are committed to “finding stories that access different perspectives, and allow us to see different dimensions of the world. ‘Big Little Lies’ was really fortunate in that it had so many characters, all of whom had very different perspectives on things.”
He praises Kidman’s performance, revealing, “I’ve never met anyone more daring than Nicole. She is willing to throw herself into her work, and into the characters that she explores more deeply than anyone I’ve ever met. She is always up for the challenge, and is always looking for new cracks and areas in the world to explore through these different people.”
