Rob Corddry and Erinn Hayes Q&A: ‘Children’s Hospital’
“I decided one day on a whim that it was the final season,” reveals Rob Corddry as we chat via webcam (watch above) about his closing the doors on “Childrens Hospital” after seven seasons. And Erinn Hayes, who plays Dr. Lola Spratt opposite his clown makeup wearing Dr. Blake Downs, chimes in with the comment, “After we had finished the whole thing.”
“Childrens Hospital” won the first two of its four consecutive bids for Best Short-format Live-Action Entertainment Program in 2012 and 2013. It then lost twice to Between Two Ferns With Zach Galifianakis,” which featured President Barack Obama (2014) and Brad Pitt (2015). While that Funny or Die show has already expired, the last season of “Childrens Hospital” is now competing in the newly-named Short Form Comedy or Drama Series against 38 other shows.
As Hayes says to Corddry, who created the series for Adult Swim, “When you called me and said we were done with the whole show, we were all very sad. But you said it was the perfect way to end it all.” Corddry replies, “those were the hardest phone calls I’ve ever had to make. The actors hadn’t been in my head while I was struggling with this. I just felt like it was disrespectful to keep the show going because there’s no reason to cancel it. I could feel myself losing my juice.”
And Hayes concedes, “it was very sad but understandable.” As she notes, “It was surprising because we ended on such a great note. We were walking away saying ‘see you next summer. We’ll be doing this for years! We’ll be doing this until they tell us to stop!’ So it was surprising. But sitting and thinking, it made sense to go out on top.”
