Tom Ford Q&A: ‘Nocturnal Animals’ director/writer

“This film is really about finding people in your life that you love, finding people that mean something to you and not letting them go,”  reveals Tom Ford as we chat about his new film “Nocturnal Animals.” He continues, “I think in today’s world we throw things away and often we throw people away. People are the most important thing in life.”

Ford is the director, writer and producer of this dark thriller about a man (Jake Gyllenhaal) who sends his ex-wife (Amy Adams) a violent book with symbolic ties to their marriage. As she reads the book, she imagines the central character of Edward Sheffield as her ex-husband, giving Gyllenhaal a dual role. The film also stars Michael Shannon, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Isla Fisher, Armie Hammer, and Laura Linney. Ford adapted the story from the novel “Tony and Susan” by Austin Wright.

The Focus Features movie is now in a limited release in Los Angeles and New York before its national roll-out on December 9. The movie is the second for Ford, who also is one of the top fashion designers worldwide. He discusses following his well-received movie “A Single Man” from 2009: “This was a much more complex film, much more complex storyline, many more characters, much more difficult to write. I don’t think I could have done it had I not made the first film… It was very contained. It was manageable for a first-time director, and I was working with terrific actors who also brought a great deal to the film.”

Colin Firth, star of “A Single Man,” received Oscar, Golden Globe, and SAG Awards nominations and won at the BAFTA Awards for Best Actor. As part of the producing team, Ford had Best Picture nominations from the Independent Spirit Awards and American Film Institute. He was honored earlier this month at the Hollywood Film Awards as Breakthrough Director of the year for “Nocturnal Animals.”
