Tony Goldwyn Q&A: ‘Scandal’
“It sure was full of surprises!” Tony Goldwyn exclaims when asked for his reaction to the tumultuous rollercoaster ride that creator and showrunner Shonda Rhimes put his character, President of the United States Fitzgerald Grant III, through on season three of ABC’s “Scandal.”
“I expected, OK after a couple of years its going to start feeling really familiar” says Goldwyn in our candid webcam chat below. “That has never happened!”
As part of the ups and downs of the past season, the actor had to explore some darker moments for his character. Grant spent much of the season behaving badly only to find redemption after he learns of his wife’s rape years earlier and deals with the sudden devastating loss of his child.
“It was terrible,” Goldwyn admits, pausing to reflect on the difficult subject matter that the cast took on in the explosive and devastating season finale. “Yeah, that was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do as an actor because I have children that age.”
“Losing a child is a parent’s worst nightmare, and I don’t like to think about that much. And yet, I had to go there. So that was extremely unpleasant, and I had become very quickly fond of Dylan [Minnette], who played my son.”
