Wendi McLendon-Covey Q&A: ‘The Goldbergs’

"I want to portray these weirdos!" yells Wendi McLendon-Covey to Gold Derby in our recent video chat. She coveted the role of "smother" Beverly Goldberg on the hit ABC comedy "The Goldbergs" for one major reason: "What sealed the deal was the footage of his (creator Adam Goldberg's) family and when I saw that I thought, 'You know if we stay true to that we will at least have a cult hit. I don't know if we'll have a popular hit, but that's what I want to do.' And I think we nailed it."

The 1980s-based laffer also starring Jeff Garlin and George Segal is in its second season. Last year, McLendon-Covey reaped a Critics' Choice Awards nomination for Best Comedy Actress and was a little surprised: "At first the critics did not like us, so that was very gratifying to get that nomination. It was really great and lots of fun. I feel like I kinda won all the prizes anyway. I get to be on the show in the first place, so just having that on top was the cherry on the icing on a very sweet cake."

While she was a lead on last summer's ballot, she will be attempting a nod this time as Best Comedy Supporting Actress. As tough as the category may be it's no secret that the Emmys do love their moms. Doris Roberts picked up four supporting trophies for playing the overbearing mother Marie Barone on "Everybody Loves Raymond," while co-star Patricia Heaton scored twice as a lead. In just the past four years, six of the comedy acting champs portrayed mothers: Julia Louis-Dreyfus (2012, 2013, 2014 for "Veep"), Julie Bowen (2011, 2012 for "Modern Family"), and Allison Janney (2014 for "Mom").

If McLendon-Covey is able to break through and land a nomination, however, she tells us she has an episode submission in mind … maybe. She says, "That is so hard for me to pick. I would say our first episode of the season, where I go to the Laserium and kind of make things right between my little boy and his girlfriend that Bev can't stand. That one puts a lump in my throat. And then maybe the one with the cabbage patch dolls. I don't know."
